I have both the new and old, scroll wheel performs fine and similar on both. Sounds like a defect.

I had the original Mx518 and can't remember any downsides to it, but this new one I threw out after a month. The scroll wheel is utter trash, you can't even rely on it to accurately scroll when browsing the web. Within the first week I noticed that when scrolling to the next tactile bump, it sometimes didn't actually register until I wiggled the wheel. I thought maybe it needed to be worn in, but it just got worse. And of course that makes it completely unreliable with gaming, which is its advertised purpose.

It's actually a really good gaming mouse. I personally didn't like the glossy texture, but it performs great.

I had a G400, so not an original 518 exactly, but I greatly preferred my old G400 over this new model. Like the poster above, the scroll wheel was a problem for me. So much so, I ended up returning it.

Mine felt off, like it was grinding against something .. just unpleasant to use in general.

I ended up getting a G403 instead -- at least the scroll wheel on this one works (so far, anyway).

Talk about throw back. is this basically the same mouse from over 10 years ago but with new graphics?

Damn, my Wow mouse. I've moved onto the g502 and now the g pro wireless but I sure stood in Ironforge a lot with that mouse doing absolutely nothing.

I've been using the G400s since I got it in 2014, never any issues. Think I might get this because I always liked the look of the original gray.

melty rubber cladding on the plastic was a definite downside.

I grabbed this on a previous sale trying to meet that good old nostalgia trip, but I find that I highly prefer newer designs like the g pro wireless, g203, m711, and viper mini. I think it's just too large of a footprint for competitive fps. Maybe if you've got very big hands and palm grip, this would be a good choice.

Previous owner of MX510 and MX518 here, and can almost bet you my grandma's best casserole that whoever came up with the naming scheme did this to prey on those with nostalgia feels for the old MX generation. Not gonna lie, I got excited reading this post seeing the MX518 name again, but can't possibly see how it's going to live up to the reputation of its predecessor.
