I was the same way, since it seemed like an overpriced Roku that came free with my streaming service, but I eventually came around to it, as there are some nice things about it If you're in the Apple ecosystem.

I have the HD version in the kids room, and a 4k version in the living room, that 4k was stuck in recovery mode for months until I read on how to solder a breakout board to the motherboard, I was able to attach a micro usb cable and put it into dfu mode, it miraculously restored and now it's back to normal, and I was also able to jailbreak it using checkra1n. For 99$ we now have one for the master bedroom, to watch 4k mkv's using Plex through the Infuse app. Great deal.
