This is not something I would've even considered. Even if it didn't have the potential to harm the eyes though it's still quite the distraction based one the one photo I saw that took a picture of it in a pitch black room. The picture was accompanied by this review:

The owlet cam doesn't have visible ir leds. The night image doesn't appear as bright. But it also doesn't distract your child with a glowing red orb of lights either.

Any time it sees nanit wear but no movement it automatically assumes no baby is in the crib and by itself will disable breathing monitoring. That sounds amazing that it knows the difference between baby simply not being in the crib versus it actually being in the crib and not breathing. If that's 100% accurate at catching the difference then kudos. However, without any way to test it without a tragic event actually happening, I for one am not willing to take a chance that chance.
