2012--End of the World? Your thoughts welcome.

Okay, so I have an older sister who is OBSESSED with reading about 2012 and the Mayan Long Count calendar. She is absolutely convinced that the Mayans were onto something and that Armageddon is just a stone's throw away.

This morning she called to tell me about a movie that is being released in November called 2012 that is, obviously, about the end times.

Okay, so aside from the fact that my husband and I think she is a one french fry short of a Happy Meal on this issue, she appears pretty normal about other issues/situations. But she harps on this 2012 all the time to anyone who will listen.

I finally Googled it and read a little but don't find it to be any more or less impressive than the Nostradamus (sp?) guy. I think people can pretty much read anything they want into things.

So my question is, anyone here ever spent any time reading about this 2012 stuff? Thoughts?

Hubby and I were checking this out and having a discussion on it...seems that there are three theories going around. One is that the world is going to end (burn up, etc). Second is that it's going to be the end of the "world as we know it" since there'll be hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes volcanic eruptions of a higher scale than we've ever seen before and this will lead to economic, moral, etc downfall for those who do survive the natural disasters. Third theory is that there isn't actually going to be any Galactic Alignment and it's all been made up to hype up the movie.

I guess it's all a matter of what you believe..since there's no proof either way of what's true at this point. And since you cant stop the world and get off, guess we all just have to wait til 11:11 on 12/21/2012 and see what happens. I'll be there with my popcorn!

which i don't completely disagree with.

2012- my money is on the aliens. hopefully then (finally) we can get our laser swords. lord knows we aren't capable of building a decent one. and flying cars. we were supposed to have those by the 80s, i think.

Has anyone considered the possibility that the Mayans would have made newer calendars with dates past 2012 if the Spaniards hadn't come and made the Mayans all died?
