My TVS-1282 has been rocking solid for 5 years. I backup my machines, run Plex, automate downloads, and even farm chia on it. Maybe you got a bad one...

Synology fan? Bad experience?
QNAP support is terrible. They do not care about their customers. Lookup all the ransomware issues they have had the past year. The recent one blows my mind. They didn't even contact their customers until long after thousands were affected. Luckily my QNAP was not. I've been shopping for a replacement.
No issues from my QNAP, i don't utilize their cloud capabilities so don't care about ransomware issues. Rock solid running as a plex server, PiHole Server, and Unifi Server.

Many people didn't even have cloud features enabled. QNAP had a backdoor that was exposed. Just count yourself lucky. I created a special rule in my router to not allow QNAP too access the internet. You would be surprised how much it connects even with all cloud features "disabled".
QNAP definitely has had their issues especially recently; moral of the story really is don't expose your NAS directly to the internet. The backdoor if you want to call it that was hard coded credentials in their Hybrid Sync Backup app.
Additionally users who were using myQNAPcloud got exposed. Qnap definitely messed up but a lot of people getting these NAS boxes think it's just a windows PC with apps and don't do enough to really lock things down properly. Oh and just remembered they had a vulnerability in their Multimedia console.....see a trend? Consumer style apps are one of their biggest issues because they want to make them easy to use to new users.
If jumping into Qnap today I'd recommend talking with a network admin to help setup or keep it offline. I've been running my 453be for several years and didn't get hit but Qnaps are such a huge target right now I would bet there will be something else.
Anyway; their hardware is good but just make sure you know what you are doing or read as much as possible before investing.

Same here my Qnap has been flawless as a Plex server. In for another

I have also put this in my parents house for backups and it works flawlessly for last 2 yrs. I used SyncBack free for backup schedules

And blocking access to the internet isn't a good choice. People choose QNAP or Synology because their connected services are easy to use.
If you are just looking for network storage, you could probably plug an external HDD into your router for a lot less money.
