I am a novice on computers, and I was actually curious about this computer before it was posted on slick deals! So I'm asking the experienced, if they think it would be a good computer for a homeschool mom? I don't do gaming and I pretty much just need it for things to like powerpoints, photos, presentations and other similar teacher like stuff! like that for my children reports I do get on the internet a lot so it would need to be fast enough that I wouldn't get frustrated while trying to do research! I would really appreciate anybody's advice it's been difficult finding a cheap computer under $500 that has above 4 GB of RAM and any kind of a hard drive but I don't know anything about gateways as far as I've heard down the grapevine from a long time ago, they don't have the best products but that was years ago! Any advice?

This Gateway should be fine. However if I were you I'd probably check out this Lenovo also from Walmart for $450. It's $59 cheaper and comes from a popular laptop brand. The Gateway brand I read was purchased by Acer and they are just putting different no-name brand laptops and calling them Gateway. Reviews on these off brand are not good. You could always return it if you didn't like it. Here is the Lenovo one. I'm also a homeschooling dad in charge of tech around the house while my wife does the teaching .

This is regular price. About a $70 increase over the 10th gen version they released a little while ago, so it may be worth it for folks who want the small bump you'll get for gaming. ETA Prime did a decent video on it. RE: charging over USB-C, there's some reports that it works, and some say it doesn't...

Thank you kindly, repped. Except for the lack of backlit keyboard I do think this is a pretty solid performer for the price, especially getting 16GB for $500 and unlocked TDP and other BIOS settings. When they start selling these refurb I think there could be some really slick potential (if you don't mind playing the refurb lottery :-)).

No problem. And you can change from 15w to 30w max power via Bios as well. Helps with performance - not with battery life.

Yes indeed!

As it turns out one of my kids needed a laptop and ended up taking my current LG, and I was curious to try this one out. I actually really like it!

Pros:
- Runs Linux like a champ (tried out Pop OS for the first time and may just stick with it). Nice performance with the 11th gen in Linux and Windows
- Cost/value is great. Like I said in my earlier post I think this is gonna be a steal when they start selling these refurbished for say $430 or whatever it ends up.
- USB-C charging confirmed! It's SO nice to have this when there are so many more expensive laptops that do not include it!
- Aforementioned unlocked BIOS
- I really like the branding, but maybe I'm unusual in liking the Gateway brand more than most people Smilie

Cons:
- Build quality - it's a little creaky when you flex the casing, but this is a minor thing.
- Some oddness with some gaming on Windows. I was curious what FPS I would get with Destiny 2 on the Iris Xe graphics but it seems to crash pretty regularly, which I imagine is 100% a driver issue, so that should get sorted eventually. That was the only game that gave me grief though.
- As mentioned, no backlit KB. Not personally a deal breaker for me but for some I can understand it.
- Wish it had an NVME expansion slot instead of just sata m.2, but I had a second m.2 sata ssd sitting around. Again many more expensive laptops have either no 2nd slot, or even worse the primary memory is soldered on, so I'll take this any day.

I solved the backlit keyboard with a set of fluorescent key stickers from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079GFYMNF/). This also happens to work well since I refuse to wear my glasses indoors and the stickers make the letters huge :-) Reminds me of the old glow-in-the-dark footprint stickers you'd get from the cereal box in the 80s.

Yes it is strange. NVME is in the boot settings but it does not recognize a NVME M.2.

I have had few problems with it however the HDMI is set up wrong somehow. It should be able to do 4k @ 30hz but it is locked down to 1080P. I am going to reload Windows 10 from Microsoft directly. Although I will also make a USB drive for this specific laptop in case it does not work. I did this on my HP Desktop and it works better with no bloatware. Once I uninstalled bloatware from this laptop it worked better. But sometimes it does not fully uninstall.

Edit: After a few days it just died. I read a lot more reviews on EVOO and Gateway two of the same. I am out of it. The HDMI only supports 1080P @ 60 HZ. Nothing above that It does not even support 30Hz at all which is just strange.

Lots of people have problems with the charger which is hard to replace. Why not USB C charging?

It is like they decided to use super cheap low quality motherboards.

Have you figured this out yet? I stuck the original SATA M.2 over in the expansion slot, which works just fine and a WD NVMe drive in the main slot and can't get it to recognize it. I'm wondering if it's just a BIOS setting missing or if they really didn't wire out the PCIe lanes to the main slot too. Seems odd.eass@braf8meac5BOUB

Rather sure it is just wired for SSD not NVME.
Also they made these sub par for external monitors. No 4k @ 30hz. It is like decade old design with the motherboard. No more EVOO or Gateway for me.
