You can find better instructions online, but the easiest way to do this is to mix borax powder with sugar in water. Then soak cotton balls in the borax/sugar water and place them around where the ants are a problem. For a few hours, they will feast. Then they are all gone

It's an ingredient for making diy slime. Kids love it, as you have to keep trying until you finally figure out the perfect ratio.
If you've never used borates, you can get up to the high level at one time through a process on Troublefreepool.com that alternates Muratic acid to drive down TA and pH, and adding borates.
It was the time my old 2hp single speed Super Pump went out after years of screaming bearings and high energy use. The ideal strategy is to get a Variable speed pump and run it 16-18 hours on low rpm. Power consumption is exponential to flow, so you can run it on low power for longer and get more water turn over and use 1/10 of the power. My consumption went from $80/mo to around $7/mo. It paid for itself in one summer.
I decided to convert to SWG at that time. The variable speed pump allows your SWG to keep the chlorine low and steady since it's always running and slowly converting chlorine. You also keep a little higher CYA (60ppm or so) and a TA around 100, which are buffers. Manually adding chlorine spikes and drops which is hell to maintain and usually results in algae (or it did for me). With the SWG, I get my TA and CYA right at the beginning of the summer and may not need to adjust pH or TA for the entire swim season (May to Oct)!
Adding borates to your pool will probably does create a small buffer to keep things a little more balanced and certainly an additional algae guard which is helpful for the manual chlorine process.
