I think he meant if you have a graphics card, the advantage an iGPU would provide is for diagnostics in case you started having video problems so you can isolate if it was from the graphics card or elsewhere. Also it could act as a temporary solution to use the computer if you needed to swap out the graphics card and there was a gap till the new one arrived.

I am running two DIY PCs with Silverstone cases still on i7-2700k Sandybridge CPUs, one as a Linux based media and file server also doing one-time video encoding for rips, the other as a Windows based media client for a 4k TV using MadVR for video processing and upscaling as well as being a 5.1 audio processor for the videos and music with room correction using Equalizer APO. The only upgrades have been SSDs and an RTX 2060 for the video processing and Scythe Big Shurikens for cooling silently (noise from both PCs kept below 20dB total for normal operation and below 6dB total at idle). On 24 hours and in use every day since they were built.

Only one pair of memory sticks died replaced free by Corsair.

It was one of the great CPUs and is about the level of a i3-8100 in performance without OC and running brilliantly. Nothing has aged for this purpose as built.

The ones that age poorly are the poorly built brand name PCs whose power supplies, fans, connectors and even wiring can deteriorate in a few years and they start wheezing and coughing before dying. Smilie

Obviously, if you want to keep up with some of the newer games, there might be some limitations but that isn't an aging issue.

You fit into the window during the great cpu stagnation when amd was not competitive and intel was lazy. Now an apple tablet is breathing down a pc's neck, things will change faster.

I bought this CPU today as an upgrade to my frankenstein i7-3770 but am having some buyers remorse and am wondering if I should cancel and get a Ryzen 3700x instead and an x570 mobo. I don't game anymore but instead need a faster workstation for video and photo editing. I'm not biased towards either brand, just want the most bang for my buck now and long term as I don't upgrade often. Still using an R9 280 3GB GPU that does what I need and can drive a 2k monitor.

Any reason to cancel for the 3700?
