Subway apparently closed a lot of stores today to train their workers for a new menu overhaul. A lot of articles online say they're giving away a million sandwiches tomorrow to promote the new menu.
No one sells for cost + small margins. Everyone tries to maximize profits. If it's cost + nominal markup, an iPhone should be selling for about $100 and pizza for
Except for rent, franchise fees, labor, two laborers browsing slickdeals.net whilst waiting for next customer. Opening and closing duties. I agree that the actual contents of the sandwich are not all that expensive, but I also have 100# of misc flour, add to that pork butts, hams, whole turkeys, misc chicken bits, and bacon in the fridge. 99c pork butt is a great deal - sometimes. But sometimes I want a friggin' sandwich placed into my hand. ($10 is too expensive for a Subway footlong though)
Go to the cheapest supermarket you can find on this planet. Then I challenge you to make that footlong for $2.
Not at all difficult, the problem is making singular. I can easily make a sandwich with 4oz of meat and all the fixings for $2.00. Just not a single one. If I were to make 100 that's ~25lbs of meat. Chicken, turkey and ham are less than $2.00/lb not even counting bulk, more like $1.00. $25 chicken breast, flour for bread. Fixin's are even cheaper (olives are kinda spendy).
It costs them less than $2 to make the sub believe it or not, so charging $8-$9 for a regular sub is a robbery, and with BOGO they're still making money. And not everyone goes in for footlong so they still have those customers who'll play $4 for a 6 inch sub.
You have no idea what you are talking about because you will never ever able to hire any employees on your own for more than a year.
My friend owns multiple Subways, I know what I'm talking about. Also they're making more than enough money on chips, cookies, pizza, and drinks, believe me they know what they're doing, and you're getting robbed without you knowing it.
Drinks have a huge profit margin. They just mix flavoring with water. That's where you get robbed, You're not getting robbed on the subs. B1G1 is a money loser for any Subway if people only buy the two subs and nothing else.

You don't seem to have a clue what you're talking about, especially with your statement about how a sub costs $2 to make and using that as a justification to say $8 is too much to charge.
If you had a clue, you'd know you have to add basic things like rent/mortgage, wages, insurance, legal, accounting, utilities, supplies (napkins, wrappers, cups, etc...), spoilage and mistakes by employees, and a bunch of other stuff. Then you add on things like the franchise fees they have to pay to Subway, which I think were something like 8% of sales, 4.5% for marketing fees, etc.... And of course nobody works for free, or wants to put the effort in to own a franchise without profit to show for it, so you need room for a healthy gross margin on top of all that.
But hey, your friend owns a bunch of Subways, which is practically like you owning them yourself, right?
Now, what the hell happened to the Subway Melt? That and the Subway Club were my go-to subs, and they are both gone now. Very disappointing!

With cup and straw it comes to roughly 1c per oz. Varies a little but that's the easy math. Refills barely matter.
And they should. No one can live a decent life on less than $15 an hour.
Dual income. $15 @ 40hrs is 62,400. More than enough in many of the flyover states coasters reference. Surely would be difficult in NYC or LA, but middle of anywhere, any state - happy life. As they sit and watch others complain about their expenses.

I'm sure those people appreciate you think they should pool their incomes to be able to live.
I am very disappointed in the purchase I made today. I ordered two Footlong All-American Clubs for $10 and each had extremely little meat. Probably just two slice of meat on the subs. I wouldn't even pay $5 for a sub like that. Goodbye Subway!
