Can't recommend this enough!! This thing is a dream for anyone looking to build a home arcade. Easy to assemble (<1 hour from parts to completion), quality components, full size joysticks and buttons with compatibility for almost any arcade game (Sam's clubs version includes pinball buttons!), great looking monitor and loud/clear speakers, easy to access I/O options (HDMI in, and 2 USB-A ports right on the front panel), tons of customizability (saUCE!!). As a video game collector, this has been the best $500 I've spent to get my retro fix on. There really isn't a better value (other than to DIY build).
I snagged one earlier this year for this price on recommendations from fellow SDers, and it's been awesome. I have three young kids (6 and under), and they love both playing with me on it or on their own. Out of the box, the system feels fairly sturdy and looks great. The builtin games are an odd mix at times with ports from various platforms (arcade, Genesis, etc.) and a surprising number of big licenses (several Disney games, Tetris, etc.). Where it really shines though is the ease in which you can add games (search "Legends saUCE" on Reddit or YouTube) to it with just a USB drive or the ability to plug a PC in to the HDMI and use a USB OTG cable to use the arcade controls with the PC.

Some items to note are that the default warranty sucks (so I'd recommend using a credit card which extends it) and AtGames support isn't great. I personally haven't had issues, but it's something to be aware of. The height is pretty good, but if you're somewhat tall (I'm 6' and it effects me), you will probably want stools or a riser (I got some sick Star Wars ones from Home Depot, A1Up also has cool ones). Although it supports some light guns, there's a huge shortage due to the ongoing chip shortage and no sign of them coming soon. Finally note the built in chip can only play through the mid 90s type games/emulators and you'd need an external PC for anything more modern (particularly anything 3D).

Overall I would definitely recommend it for anyone who still has nostalgia for classic gaming/arcades. I had been planning on building one at some point, but with the crazy price of wood, that plan had been put on hiatus. This has now totally filled that desire and probably for a lot cheaper than DIY.
Outstanding price. Easily worth $500.

Pity Sam's Club is membership. Would cop this today for sure.
You can sometimes get a Sams Club membership for free after factoring in the after-purchase gift card reward. I got a membership this way for the sole reason of buying the ALU when it first came out.

Arcade1Up cabinets are 3/4, as stated on their own product listings:

"These machines are ¾ scale of traditional arcade machines. When used with the riser, controls fall at the same height they did in the original arcade cabinets.

Dimensions are: 45.8" H x 23" D x 19" W"

AtGames Legends Ultimate:

"Full size home arcade: 29.53 x 21.65 x 66.44 inches"

The AtGames cabinet is obviously substantially bigger and is close enough to "full-size" for any reasonable person to believe their claim.
Agreed. I have all 3 (actual arcade cabinet, ALU and A1Up) and the ALU control deck was actually a bit higher than my real arcade cab (though the real arcade cab was taller due to the shape of the cab. The shallower depth of the ALU is nice because it takes up less space in the room. But from a sturdiness standpoint, those real arcade cabs are beasts...very solid and VERY heavy, especially with a CRT in them.

I wonder if you could get the membership, buy the machine, then get a refund on the membership..

Thanks so much for the link!!! I thought standalone was the product name : )

So the two player controller was 99??? Man wish I scored that.
Is this basically the same thing minus the screen/cabinate of the one on sale???
Yeah. I love it. I got one to try and should have bought more for siblings. I didn't understand the potential until I YouTubed it. I don't think the cabinet has the side buttons for pinball. Hopefully these go on sale again.

Friendly advice, get the Sam's extended warranty. It's like $40 and gives you three years protection iirc. The manufacturer only gives like 90 days. Granted I've had mine going on a year and no issues yet but good peace of mind.
I don't see the option to add a warranty. Do you do it after the fact?

I checked the game list and it doesn't have Galaga 1 & 3. Sad that I have to pass, my only personal requirement.
Forget about the built in games. With saUCE you can put over 7000 arcade and consol games on it via USB stick and essentially can play every classic arcade game there was including Galaga 1 & 3 plus Gyruss plus Galaxian plus etc.etc....

Just check out YouTube and search ALU and Sauce and start understanding what this bad boy can do!

Solid price. This was $460 at Walmart earlier in the year, so if you have patience it might come back down and no membership needed.
Perhaps so, but keep in mind that since I believe Walmart considers the ALU a "Consumer Electronics" product the return period is 30 days, whereas if you purchase it from Sam's the return period is 90 days.

Not sure which "manufacturer" you're referring to, but AtGames warranty is a piddly 30 days. Now if you buy the ALU from Sam's then since they have a 90-day return policy you would effectively have in essence a 90-day warranty.

I don't see this as a deal when you can go to Etsy, search up Arcade Guys (they have an IG also) and they send you a fully assembled slim arcade with over 800+ games, 32" screen, slim, etc for $995. Sure it's double the price, but with the amount of games it's endless.
Or pay $500 for this and $100 at most for a USB that has 1600+ games via CoinopsX and save $400

That's what I did and I am loving this thing. I'm in my early 40s and this is right in my wheelhouse.

is it easy to add MAME to this?
There's really no need to try to replace what is built-in with MAME because you can add other games through the UCE expansion method.

My understanding of the technical details is that it is already using emulators and the UCE API lets you add ROMs and specify the emulator to use (or include the emulator in the UCE file...with some limitations I'm sure since emulators with higher-level hardware requirements wouldn't work). Of course if you are just getting UCE files built by others (and there are many to choose from), then you don't need to deal with those technical details. You just need to learn how to get the UCE files on your flash drive (and how to properly format your drive if you are also going to use it for storing downloaded games/app from AtGames from their AppStoreX section).

That's what I really like about the ALU...all of the hacking stuff you need to do with systems like the A1Up cabs is supported out of the box without any modifications. It does far more out of the box than the A1Up cabs (and many others) and can easily be extended to do much more without any hacking...you just need to do some research on how to use UCE files. You can even connect other systems like a Retropie or PC using the HDMI/USB ports and use it as a control deck and display for those systems so you don't have to build a full cabinet for them.

While not perfect in every way, it's the best option I've seen anywhere near this price point for what you get out of the box and what you can do to expand it with minimal effort.

I think it's upon check out. Definitely get it though - the factory warranty is only 30 days. Mine died in right under 90 days. Sam's took it back, but I couldnt believe the factory warranty was only 30 days.
