For anyone wondering whether the Samsung is worth more money, the specs state it is up to twice as fast (~1000MB/s vs 540MB/s for the Crucial x6).

Note that the computer must have a USB C 3.2 10/gbps port for that to apply... "USB 3.2 Gen2 and UASP support are required for maximum transfer speed (1,050 MB/s)." Older or cheaper laptops likely are limited to the 5gbps speed (at best).

The Crucial x8 is rated for the higher speeds and is priced comparably to the Samsung:

Crucial x8 is also on sale at Newegg [newegg.com]

In short Crucial X6 is Samsung T5 tier. X8 is the T7 competitor.

Besides build quality and objectively better look, T5 comes with both type c and type a cables.

Support of USB3.2G2 doesn't mean much, same reason any car can print 200 miles per hour on their speedometer.

I did that back in January. Bought a 3000+ mb/s m.2 and an enclosure. It works well but i think ultimately its a toss up. You wont be getting that performance when connecting via USB.

Using any other cable other than the one provided gives me sub 50mb/s. I only have 1 c port on my motherboard as well, and it's occupied by another external. The solution was to buy the USB adapter they make, and that gets me 800mb/s in any of the usb 3.2 ports.

Still waiting to replace my 1TB NVMe SSD I bought three ago for $69. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron please stop colluding to milk the consumer at 1-2TB kkthx. We are ready to be cheated at 4-16TB.

I bought the 2tb x6 during prime day, it cannot be used for steam library, when trying to launch game off the x6, the disk time goes to 100% but zero bytes transferred and the game hangs. This happened to two x6… On the other hand, my 1tb 5t runs steam games perfectly.

The X6 has QLC NAND and uses a small SLC cache whereas the T5 has TLC NAND and a DRAM cache.

So it's really up to preference.

Can't you make a faster and smaller external 512GB drive by buying a PCIe gen 3 drive for about $50 and a PCIe external case for about $20 or $25 ?
