If you don't know Drop.com, they used to be known as Massdrop.com. They have been around a long time. Reputable company. Used to focus on organizing group buys to direct ship products to you from vendors at wholesale prices. Now they just get decent prices all around.
If you're familiar with the Sennheiser GSP 500, GSP 600 or Game One headsets, this is better version of them all.
I've had Game Ones for years and bought the PC38x for $170 last year. Even though it's cheaper now, I don't regret the purchase. Sound reproduction is better than my older Game Ones. These are really great open air headphones, mic is very good too. My personal favorite thing about the mic is the manual shut off by swinging the mic arm upwards.

However, one of the biggest differences is the purpose. This is a gaming headset and includes a really high quality microphone with Sennheiser quality speakers and build.
1 black band = mono (single channel)
2 black bands = stereo (2 channels)
3 black bands = stereo plus mic input (3 channels)
Sorry if I wasted anyone's time!

You can easily buy extra/better ear pads for $20 - $50ish.
I have both and I prefer these over the alienware. If the alienware was open back and addressed some issues (that f'n voice telling you when mic is on/off is so stupid!), I would prefer them. If you prefer closed back then you might prefer the alienware sound stage. I have been told that the mic on the sennheiser sounds better, but the alienware mic isn't bad either.
I also have the 37x and those are good as well (got both as open box in pristine condition for super cheap) I do appreciate the 38x having both cables especially in a case where a cable gets damaged (I think my mic cable on the 37x is having issues), so you could replace them. The 38x audio is a little better, and I think I remember that Joshua dude on YouTube having a good comparison video (I want to say the drivers were updated but I can't remember for sure). The 37x is the clear winner for color, though you could fix that by slapping a Wu-Tang Killah bee on the 38x. 😉
Another bonus over the 37x is the 38x comes with 2 sets of pads - velour and I think a pleather. I've kept the velour on as I'm used to those. I have a fat head (bigger than 7.5 hat) and the 38x is comfortable for long sessions. I'd say more comfortable than the alienware.
I had the x2 Hrs with a mic attachment - the build quality is good on both but Phillips takes it with the beautiful leather and just the heartiness of it. (Although heavier). Unfortunately I returned the X2s as the "highs" were just too rough for me during games, music was no problem most of the time. It was like chalk on a blackboard. I guess it's a personal thing. With that being said the PC38x have been by my PCs side since they came out. They're just so damn good for what they are not to mention how convenient with the mic.
This will be my first pair of open-back headphones so I'm hoping I like them for gaming and general use.

The pros were the build quality and clarity.
The cons were that I had to max them out to get any decent volume and even then I wished I had a little more, which is not what I read. These are not supposed to need an amp at all. They also have pretty bad vertical sound positioning to my ears. I thought for sure someone in Apex was above me when they were below. Last, there's some frequency, not sure which, that sounds pretty rolled off in the mids or highs. It sounds slightly muffled, like you're listening to a speaker with a blanket on it.
I thought something was probably wrong with that set, so I returned them to Amazon and got another pair directly from drop. Same thing. Hopefully this helps someone. I'm still looking for my perfect pair of headphones.

Something many forget about is that older mobos use older sound drivers.
