You can still issue voice commands from the device but it won't be able receive notifications, drop-ins, or other alerts.

I set my echos to show pictures we upload to Amazon Photos so it works like a digital picture frame, but they do cycle your pictures with other content such as recipes, news, random facts and sponsored content. I find a lot of the other content interesting, but to each their own.
I would never again buy another Echo Show because of the constant nagging with ads and displaying content I never asked for. It is insidious. No, there is no way to permanently stop them. Turning off home screen rotation, turning off all home content options, etc. do not work. As if it wasn't bad enough to have ad content appear as part of skills (e.g. "Try Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime Video!" appear on your podcast display, they now have gone full screen with their ads under the heading "Alexa for your Day". Never again.

To those who commented here about news, horoscopes, and the like, you are probably right that they didn't know those could be turned off. But that's not what I'm talking about. I was very clear to say I had all home screen content toggled off, as well as home screen rotation disabled. There is a "Things to Try" under Settings which leads a lot of people to think that can be turned off. But there is no setting there .. just a collection of "Things to Try".
Look, I'm not doubting your experience with your device if that's what you say. But don't start doubting mine. By the way, I'm running Fire OS 6.5.4.6 (NS6546/3378). Check yours. I do know that some have reset to factory settings to get rid of Things to Try and Alexa for Your Day, and that works, but it comes back when upgraded.
