I bought two of these on Prime Day at this price and sent them back. I thought the audio quality was slightly inferior to the previous version and the follow-me camera movement was just ok. The deal breaker was/is Amazon constantly pushing content -- advertisements and some sort of news show would just play on their own. Even worse, voice commands were ignored or delayed to get it to stop. I was so frustrated that I did a factory reset and sent them back. Definitely best price of the year if you don't mind all that stuff.

I'd say about 60% of the time, my Show 5, which i do not like, just shows my selected background an the time. It will periodically shift a forecast, 4 days or something, and then a pick of some news that it asks me to try and play, or my recently played music or but it never auto plays... anything. Even with these news items and recipes... whatever it thinks I might be interested in, the time and temp are in the left hand corner.

So if the dissatisfaction is it treats your chosen background as more like a screensaver pic along with a lot of other things... then that's mostly true. If it's the issue is aut0playing videos, I've never experienced that. Once you do try one of the things it suggests though, I believe it will keep going on other topics until you tell it to stop.

You can still issue voice commands from the device but it won't be able receive notifications, drop-ins, or other alerts.

I have been wanting to get to get this but now I won't. I don't want Alexa doing anything other than answering commands.

Unless you really need the camera features or want marginally better audio quality, get the Fire 10 (plus) and put it show mode. Much better value and the battery makes it portable. We have one set up like this and mounted to the fridge door. It gets used anytime someone spends more than 5 minutes in the kitchen.

Echo show 5 for around has been one of my most used purchases. Would it be worth upgrading to the 10 at this price?

I have the previous gen Show and the only ads I get are like watch Jack Ryan on Prime, learn how to cook pasta, or news headlines. None of it bothers me cause I'm just walking by and catch a glimpse of it. Maybe I don't care too much for Prime video recommendations.

What is absolutely annoying is Things to Try. It really makes me want to migrate from Alexa ecosystem. Also when the first gen Show came out I bought 3 of them and gave two to grandparents. Literally just for videochat, and it was so laggy and audio/mic sucked for just one of the units. I upgraded that unit to this new Show and it is night and day better. They clearly skimped hard on hardware for the first gen despite being the flagship Alexa device back then. This new one is definitely much nicer. Yea the tracking thing can be so dumb but when it works it's neat.

Other than Alexa being in the game longer than Google, I don't know what they offer over Google at this point.

IMO Echo 10 a bit buggy. Won't accept next, close or turn off as commands for amazon music which is very annoying. I have to say next song or turn off music to. Debating whether I should return it or wait for firmware update.

All that said, I have noticed my AFTVs getting more and more ads that are really starting to mess with what was an otherwise nice user interface. I could see getting such ads if I were not a Prime subscriber but it is something on my radar that could push me to another platform once my devices start to die of old age.
