About this book:- This new edition is illustrated with J.R.R. Tolkien's own artwork, created as he wrote the original text. It will be packaged with the following features: shrink-wrapped for damage protection, a sewn hardback binding with a ribbon placemark, ink-sprayed edges displaying Tolkien's runes, two maps loosely tucked, and will be printed on FSC "forest-friendly" paper. The text will be printed in two colors with full-color illustrations, and the dustjacket will be stamped in two foils with a circular die-cut.

*edit: yes, the watercolor illustrations showing up in the amazon reviews section are from the 2013 or earlier version, and are by Alan Lee, not Tolkien.**

I've got my 3 volume hardcovers and paperbacks and kindle version so I'll pass on this one.

I'm guessing you've never been a student? Books this size are quite common and can be rested on a desk to read for example.
dustycollection.I only have three different different book versions but this will go real nice with my LOTR vinyl copies.
Technically 6 books, broken into three volumes (2 each) with the appendices and accompanying stories being a debatable 7th book.
that's why the morgan in new york ran an exclusive exhibit on his work couple years back that sold out. definitely atrocious. yup.

And if you know that quote as, "You shall not pass," then please do buy this so you can find out that Gandalf actually (ackshually!) said, "You cannot pass!"
Now had you said "Fly, you fools" to this deal, we could be friends. 😂
"Although generally known to readers as a trilogy, the work was initially intended by Tolkien to be one volume of a two-volume set along with The Silmarillion, but this idea was dismissed by his publisher.[3][T 2] For economic reasons, The Lord of the Rings was published in three volumes over the course of a year from 29 July 1954 to 20 October 1955.[3][4] The three volumes were titled The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Structurally, the work is divided internally into six books, two per volume, with several appendices of background material at the end. Some editions print the entire work into a single volume, following the author's original intent." - Wikipedia

Read the books as a kid and watched the movies as an adult. The movie altered the line for artistic reasons. The original line just doesn't have the same impact on screen.

Yeah, that quote is a meme for a reason, Tolkien wasn't a god and improvements can be made to his writing. (It's also possible that the modern audience has changed to appreciate these combination of words as opposed to Tolkien's audience.)
