Speaker wire is low voltage, high current and there is no safety ground. Do not do this!
I had to do a run from my outdoor patio, to the attic, and then down. to the amp in the basement. Was probably over 100 feet for one speaker. It's really a matter of how much overall resistance is on the wire relative to the speaker impedance.
My largest regret in my AV build was using 12awg. It was just so thick I found it hard to work with. It is great if you can work with but for me, and the quality of my speakers and equipment it was overkill & hard to work with.

Wish this deal was around a few months ago when they were building my house.
Ended up using 16AWG instead.

I installed 485 feet of this to wire up a 7.4.1 system in a dedicated home theater. Great wire. I paid $180 for a 500ft spool, so this is a great deal.

12awg is overkill for most distributed audio system. Most integrators use 16, we use 14.

You are absolutely right. Unless you are running 1000 ft to speakers, it makes no sense to get 12AWG over 16AWG. For 20 ft, the resistance is .03 ohm and .08 ohm respectively for 12awg and 16awg.

I use 14awg or 16awg, depending on the application. 12awg seems like it has limited use for most people and it's probably harder to work with given the thickness of the jacket.
