Dorman is a last-resort brand. Usually low quality, and their warranty is useless.
Well, I would say it's great in some products, OK in others, and not so good in the rest. For instance, I bought an upper intake manifold for a Ford in mid 2012. It just developed a leak, so 9 years of regular use. This is exactly what the OEM part lasted - 9 years. The genuine Ford manifold was twice as much at the time, so excellent value there. As to the warranty, the part had a lifetime warranty. However, since I needed the car fixed right away, I bought the SAME part locally from an auto parts store and requested a refund for the original part from 2012 (bought from amazon) which it happened to be more expensive back then. To my surprise, they refunded my money in an amazon gift card, in my eyes, that's the ultimate warranty policy, can't top that. These two events are independent of each other.
Now, a horrible example is their coolant reservoir for 98-04 Dodge Intrepids and alike. They just don't last and fail in 6 to 8 months, you would be lucky to get 1.5 years out of one of those things. Those coolant bottles are made to be opened, filled, and not to be touched ever again. I had one replaced under warranty, for the second time around, I requested a refund for the cost of the reservoir and I was denied (surprisingly it's only ¼ of the cost of the previously mentioned manifold). They did offer a second replacement bottle, but just reading the reviews on the part, I decided not to get the part (even under warranty) and I just went ahead and bought a genuine Mopar part. 6 years later, I'm now (and I do mean today Smilie ) ordering another Mopar coolant reservoir.
Another great part is the aluminum water outlet housing for 2.7L Chrysler engines. For the longest time, such part did not exit. The original part from Chrysler (and Dorman's original aftermarket replacement) was plastic and it would fail and leak every 2 to 4 years. The new metal part has been in my Chrysler car for about 4 years with no signs of trouble. This is my experience with them and I'm sure experiences vary widely.

I think Amazon was the reason you got any money back. I tried to deal with Dorman directly and it was frustrating and futile.

Dorman works with a 3rd party company named RPS marketing. They seem to handle their warranty issues and represent the company within Amazon. I'm sure they have guidelines and some leeway they follow (from Dorman) when it comes to warranty issues because at the end of the day, the money is coming out of them (Dorman). The way it went for me is I contacted Dorman directly, they told me to contact their representative in Amazon (RPS marketing), and they (RPS) instructed Amazon to reimburse me in a gift card. Of course, It took a few emails, and some details about the part/failure. But all I have to say, is that Dorman, RPS marketing, and Amazon, have given me great customer service in more than one occasion (and no, I don't work nor I get paid by any one of those companies).

PS: It seems RPS serves the western part of the US. So, if you live in the other side of the US, that can explain things a little bit more.
