I know people hate it when someone suggests separate speakers with AVR setup, for the actual 5.1 setup. But whoever getting this, hope they know what they're getting into. Don't buy this for 5.1 reason alone, because no matter whatever the magic they do, this won't give you an actual 5.1.
So if you don't want to deal with the "wires and chaos" of an AVR setup, I would recommend to get a 2.1 (or 3.1) sound bar. It's going to be same as this 5.1.

How does this compare to a 2.1 setup with nice speakers (I have the KEF q150s)? I've been contemplating a sound bar for convenience but the reviews on this one are a bit mixed.

Definitely agree with this statement here. IMO soundbars and dedicated AVR surround sound systems cater to different audiences.
If you're an audiophile with a proper theater setup and deep pockets, a nice AV receiver with fancy surround speakers and woofers can't be beat.
However, if you're in the 98% and you're just looking to get quality sound in your living room with minimal fuss, a soundbar with wireless rears is the way to go.
I replaced an old proper 7.1 system (Onkyo receiver and a mix of Sony/Polk speakers) with a LG SN10YG soundbar plus the SPK8 rears and honestly love it. The sound quality is about 85-90% as good with none of the bulk or wires. Plus the soundbar is CEC compliant so it turns on and off with the TV, has built-in casting for music and Google Assistant (which can be disabled), and probably most importantly, has two HDMI passthrough ports (just like an AVR) so I can hook up my Switch and PS4 directly to the soundbar and run a single HDMI eARC connection to my TV (LG GX).
It says that is rear speaker ready. Rear speakers not included and sold separately. Calling it a 5.1.2 and not include the rear speakers is a little deceiving.

I am guessing you didn't "read the features" . The bar has 7 speakers, 5 normal and 2 height, and then the .1 for the sub. The 2xsurrounds are on the sides(using the same reflection approach as the heights), the 2xfronts and 1xcenter in the front, and the 2xheight on top. On the LG page it says add the wireless rears to become 7.1.2: https://www.lg.com/us/home-audio/...sound-bar#
Will there be audio lag with this when using an LG OLED tv and Xbox series x? Trying to find a soundbar that won't have the audio latency issue with my CX
Just FYI Xbox series X has audio lag any time audio processing like Dolby Atmos or Windows Sonic surround are enabled on the system. I just play with unprocessed audio now because I'm very sensitive to the lag.

Keep your kef. Sound bars are for people that care more about aesthetics than sound. My living room had 3 Kef q100 for LCR and loved them. I have since upgraded to larger tower speakers (infinity R263 and RC263).
Right here. I jumped IMMEDIATELY . After researching the SN9YG, and figuring I would pay $100-$200 on the rears to add to this deal making it $550-$650, spending the extra $150 to get the TOTL LG bar that hopefully meshes well with my CX TV, which includes bigger/better bar (56" vs. 48", where more separation for fronts, surrounds, and ceiling/atmos speakers is a good thing) with more/better output and more HDMI inputs, and getting the rears with atmos speakers on top (which the rears you get for the other bars don't have) to get it to 7.1.4 to get you the best that LG has to offer for less than half of the $1500 MSRP (that it actually sold at for a good while), to me was a no brainer.
Other than the WhatTheHiFi review, it is a very well reviewed sound bar. I am a guy that has never had a sound bar vs. being a HT-o-phile and 2ch guy with things like Veritas 2.8, Aragon BB amps, etc., so I am really looking forward to see how far along they have come from the first crap cheap sound bars I tried like 10 years ago . I guess the Samsung TOTL is better, but oh well, $800 is already higher than I wanted to pay for a bar to try this stuff out, but for this deal, worth stretching a bit to me.

I had to reposition my sub many times till I found a spot (with direct line of sight to the soundbar and it never drops anymore. The receiver for the rears are in the same spot but that drops every few seconds.
