What does that have to do with my observation that Google is offering deals on an existing model right before a new one comes out? Did I say the 5a wasn't worth purchasing?

I would consider this a brand new model, I think official release date was today. Maybe you are confusing this phone with last year's pixel 4a, pixel 4a 5g, or the pixel 5? Chances are they will offer this deal on the pixel 6 when they are released.

Yes it is a brand new phone launched this week. It is also aimed at a different user. The pixel 6 will be twice as expensive.

Just note to anyone activating on googlefi. They ship these with a Fi sim card but they also send a flyer with details of sim free setup. Someone screwed up as the physical sim card won't activate. Pull out the sim and throw it in the trash and activate using esim. If you want a physical sim instead go to your fi account and order one and swap to it later.

What's stopping you from buying an Xperia and using it on Fi?

For Google One users with a storage package larger than 2 TB, Google will give you 10% back in store credit for each purchase.

There doesn't seem to be a way to get the 3 months free for google fi and the $15 a month subscription. Does anyone have google Fi service? Does anyone use Google Fi for voice and Visible for data? i've seen people post they use the dual sim with those two companies.

also it doesn't look like the 5a will get unlimited google photo uploads, can anyone confirm this?

yes, no unlimited google photo uploads on the 5a. bummer

my 5a delivered this morning. I got an email about the 3 months of Google Fi but I've never used Fi and won't be using it in the future. I would much prefer a deal on Youtube TV.

There is no sim card in these phones - at least not this one. I already have mine...

Some on other threads said that Fi is good to use their service abroad. Could anyone tell me the advantage of Fi vs T-Mobile where I am paying 20c/min with free text and slow but usable free data needed for Waze, whatsup, email, light browsing?

yep i've used them abroad pre-pandemic and the speed was great. I didn't test its speed, but i think it should be 3G and not 2G as offered by Tmobile. Other than that, the international call features and costs are equivalent, even the supported country list are about the same. If you don't travel internationally as frequently or can have access to wifi internationally pretty easily (such as travel for work frequently and stuck in hotels like me), I think tmobile's plan is good enough.

if you will be out and about and need reliable data connection for any country, you could consider switching. Best of all, all of them are month-to-month, so try open a google fi account, order a sim card, plug it in and try it out when you are out. You pay $10/GB of data used. When you don't need it, pause the service or cancel whenever you want. I've used them once for couple days and they prorated my data charges so I weren't charged the entire $10/GB but for MBs that I actually used. I've had my fi service paused this entire pandemic since I haven't need to travel internationally at all. I maintain my phone number, yet no bill at all.
