advantage of this HP over the lenovo
1. This HP has usb-c with DP and PD, meaning you can actually use a dock to both power the laptop as well as having 4K60hz output over the usb-c. The lenovo usb-c has neither DP or PD function
2. This HP has HDMI 2.0. The lenovo only have hdmi 1.4 meaning that lenovo has no way to output 4K60hz at all while with the HP you can actually connect two external 4K screens and run both at 60hz. If you are the type that want a laptop that can run multiple external screen, the HP beats the lenovo by a mile
3. This HP has dual ram slots meaning you will be able to upgrade all the way to 64GB ram and run them in dual channel. The lenovo has a built in 4GB soldered ram with 1 ram slot (hence it has a weird 12GB ram configuration with the costco model because that one ram slot has an 8GB module). So with the lenovo you are limited to 40GB ram and its not dual channel.

advantage of the lenovo:
1. Slightly bigger battery
2. Slightly brighter screen
3. Black color keyboard is better with white backlit and visibility compared to the HP silver keys not as well visible with the backlit.
Not sure if anybody has already answered this but this deal is better than the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 deal you're referring. IdeaPad 3 15 is equivalent to HP 15 and lowest tier in their main line of consumer laptops. It has 4GB soldered ram and only one upgradable ram slot, only HDMI 1.4 port and the Type-C port is a 5Gbps data port, not supporting display out and charging.
This Pavilion 15 has two ram slots, supporting 64GB of memory (32GB is the max HP sells this model with, not maximum supported), hdmi 2.0 port and fully featured Type-C port, supporting 10 Gbps data, display port 1.4 (4k at 120 Hz) and power delivery charging which can be used to charge the device with any 45W+ PD charger.
Why does HP keep releasing these decent laptops with a 250nits screen?

Nice specs but 250nits is a deal breaker for me.

I don't have a 4k monitor yet, but the prices are dropping fast enough that this will be a decent option during BF or next year?
Again, thank you. I did not know that one could run multiple items off of one usb-c port!
With a dock made for that, of course.
Quote from glennh01 :
Anyone have a suggestion for a dock for this? Was considering waiting for a deal like the recent one with the Dell Inspiron that had the i7 CPU and Thunderbolt 4 but it seems this system would not be too much of a step down. Yeah I'd lose the T4 connector and have the USB-C with DP and charging instead, but gain the Costco warranty.

I presume with a dock from the USB-C that I could connect dual monitors via HDMI (or DP if the monitor has that) thru the dock?
With thunderbolt higher bandwidth, you can actually run TWO 4K60hz monitors off the one usb-c at full uncompressed bandwidth. But this laptop doesnt have TB and only the lower bandwidth usb-c so you can only run ONE 4K60hz monitor through that usb-c (Or you can run two 4k monitor but it would be with MST or compressed signals and are buggy sometimes). If you want to connect two 4K60hz monitors reliably you will just have to connect the other monitor to the HDMI 2.0 port.

You don't have to have a dock to be able to use the DP and PD function. you can get a usb-c to DP cable and connect the laptop to any 4K monitor with a DP 1.2 input. Some of these newer 4K monitors also have usb-c input so you won't need a usb-c to DP cable, but just a regular usb-c cable rated for DP and PD and connecting to the monitor will allow for graphic output to the monitor as well as the monitor powering the laptop, all through that one usb-c cable!

Of course, having a dock is great because a lot of the dock also has additional usb 3.1 as well also LAN ethernet (which this laptop and most others compact laptops don't have) as well as card readers (but not needed since this laptop does have a microsd reader).

This is the one i use:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_...1&_sacat=0

It's made by HP, somewhat older but still work quite well. It does have HDMI and also a full size regular DP port which a lot of the cheaper docks lack. And the price is fairly reasonable. Very solid HP quality!

Oh cool. So if you have the old one, what is your opinion of it so far? The case is full plastic right? How are the thermals, keyboard, brightness, and trackpad? I don't see many reviews of this Costco version and I think the quality is about the same as the HP deal.

I do agree that there are more suitable deals for people who won't be taking advantage of all the features of this laptop, like the barebones HP or the previous Costco Lenovo deals. A typical user probably won't be using 16 threads, 16 GB ram, and 2 displays. They could probably do without the touchscreen too. And probably be fine with 256 GB SSD if they don't store a ton of media and games.
HP used this same case for the Walmart BF deal from last year as well as the custom HP deal. It's a nice compact thin case. And it's not cheap plastic. It's metallic alloy because the case is actually cold to the touch and solid. The ryzen cpu thermal are excellent so never had any problem. I run starcraft 2 at medium setting and 4K60hz output on the WM ryzen 5 4500u HP and works great!

Here's the old thread on the WM ryzen 4500U:

https://slickdeals.net/f/14516138-hp-pavilion-15-6-model-15-eh0090wm-ryzen-5-4500-8gb-ram-512-ssd-live-on-11-11-379?v=1&src=SiteSearch

HP custom 4700U: https://slickdeals.net/f/14628808-hp-pavilion-15z-15-6-laptop-1080p-ips-ryzen-7-4700u-8gb-ram-256gb-ssd-400-free-shipping?p=144140510#post144140510

You can see how popular they were! HP has a great compact low weight low power 15 in ryzen laptop design here. I mean lenovo might be a little more solid with a little brighter screen but I still like the HP design a lot given a lot of the limitation on the lenovo.

One aspect may matter for those people who will use a laptop plugged-in for any extensive period of time: whether a laptop offers the option to stop charging the battery after a certain threshold level. The Lenovo Ideapad 3 on sale at Costco a few weeks back does provide such an option. If you enable it, the laptop (when plugged in) will stop charging the battery at around 60% level. This helps a lot if you care about the laptop battery health. I am not sure whether this HP provides the option. Without this option, your battery will be charged to 100% and will be kept at that level when the laptop is plugged in. The battery capacity will reduce substantially over a period of two or three years if it is always kept at 100%.

I tried to find out if HP has that option. I don't think it has Windows software like Lenovo does, but I hear some models have a setting called "Battery Care Function" or "Battery Health Manager" in the BIOS. Not sure about this one.

If anyone has already received their laptop, please help us check.

EDIT: My laptop arrived and I checked. It doesn't have the settings above to set a specific maximum battery percentage, but it has something called "Adaptive Battery Optimizer". HP doesn't isn't specific on what it does though.

I have a HP14 that I bought back in Nov 2019 and it does not have such an option, I heard that HP only provides such an option in some their business line products.

easy solution is not to leave your laptop plugged in whenever you have it off!

I have an HP that I bought earlier with this screen (touch screen) and for me 250 nits is perfectly fine. I don't use it outdoors. I usually use it around 50% brightness.

I also much prefer 1080p screens at this size (I have a 14" though), I had an XPS with a 13" 4k screen and while it was extremely sharp, I was unable to use it without scaling, and that was a very frustrating and irritating experience.

All depends on what you care about. For me it's perfectly fine.

With the Costco $50 off $500, I think this deal is somewhat comparable to last year's HP laptop Black Friday deal with some customizations. At a glance, laptop quality looks about the same to me. I wonder if those guys posted any reviews of that laptop.
...

This deal is $610 - $50 coupon = $560 with 5% paypal key discover cashback.

So this deal is $560 - $548 = $12 more expensive than the previous deal with a few upgrades. It has also been about 9 months since that deal. If you buy this laptop before the deal expires, the 90 day return policy will land you within Black Friday 2021 to return if there are better deals.
Sounds good overall! But, does anybody have this 50 off 500 coupon that is valid right now? It seems the prior coupons were time limited, but multiple uses. Can anybody post it?

Would you consider unscrewing the back cover to see which SSD/HDD slots are available? I am interested to add more storage as drive #2, basically, keep the factory one as system drive, and keep other stuff on another (QLC?) drive. Does anyone have any idea about this?

I'm not sure if there's a current batch of codes that have been e-mailed, but I contacted Costco customer service via chat to inquire how one gets on the mailing list for the $50 off $500+ coupons, and the CSR offered to provide me one. Wink2 (And yes, it works on this laptop.)

Sorry, I don't want to peel off the rubber feet right now.

I think the internals might be the same as the models in these two videos:

Just talk to customer service on live chat and say you lost your previous one. They'll generate a new one for you that is valid for a few days. The one they generate seems to be single use.
