  • About this deal:
    • This price is $150 lower (25% savings) than the list price.
    • Deals on 17.3" laptops have been less common than the more popular smaller sizes. This is a good budget choice for those who have light to moderate computing power needs and wish to have a larger than average display.

Stopped by my local (not really that local) Staples and picked one up.

Initial impression -- for an i3 CPU, it's pretty decent! 4 Core / 8 thread. 3.7Ghz Turbo.
The SSD is an NVMe Samsung according to device manager.
The WIFI card is an Intel AX201 Wifi6 adapter.

The screen is fine. I've seen worse and I've seen better, but for a $450 laptop, it's a decent screen. Colors and brightness are acceptable.

The keyboard is confirmed NOT backlit. As a matter of fact, the picture on Staples.com of this unit shows the F4 key with a symbol on it of a lit keycap. The actual laptop has the F4 key blank. So there must be a model with a backlit KB, but this one is not it.

If you have questions, let me know. I've got a spare 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM I want to stick it in so I'll be opening it up.

edit: I forgot, it comes with McAfee, Wild Tangent Games and Express VPN bloatware. Easily uninstalled. Other than that, pretty lean.

edit 2: Here are pics of the inside. 2.5" SATA missing cable, etc.

Demand will likely increase this winter, as people will be holed up at home during the cold and want stuff to do/upgrade PC or give as a gift. Intel will also be moving their desktop CPUs to the same major node 10nm/Intel 7 as their laptops with the introduction of Alder Lake 12th gen in october. All the other fabs producing chips have raised prices due to demand and being behind. Crypto is also going back up, and Windows 11 launching in october a lot of people will be looking to upgrade (happens every windows launch)

So yeah, this holiday season is going to be crazy for PC's/PC components/consoles, far worse than last year.
Good point about Windows 11. Last I heard a lot of hardware won't make the upgrade so people will be looking to replace computers and laptops they would have otherwise kept a while longer. There are some geopolitical concerns in the area of the globe where a lot of the fabs are too, and of course inflation is pretty harsh here at home now so there are a lot of reasons I am doing my Christmas shopping early this year and putting stuff aside. This laptop is in that category.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank buzzy

fwiw searching on 4C4B3UA brought up this page on the HP Support site, that was the only hit I could get there. So these docs might (or might not) apply to this model.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/prod...ku=4C4B3UA

Manual:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Man...057224.pdf

See p 37 and 39 for illustration of where the SSD and hard drive are installed. I haven't really read through it - but the issue in the past with another recent HP computer was that the mounting bracket for a second SATA drive was expensive/hard to obtain. Though if the connector is there it shouldn't be hard to hack something to hold it in place.

In what way is that a better deal? Nothing about it is better than this deal.

Speaking of "outdated design" 1600x900 displays are so last decade.

Despite the Staples site saying "Backlit Keyboard: No", I was looking at the pics of the keyboard. If you zoom in on the keyboard, the F4 key looks like it controls the keyboard backlight. The symbol looks like a lit keycap.

Staples has an HP 17.3" laptop on sale for 25% off this Labor Day if anyone is looking for a cheap one. I like the large screen because my eyes aren't getting any sharper, and my lap isn't getting any smaller Peace

It specs out well for the money. I am not big on HP laptops but I picked up one of these for my wife who just surfs and isn't very hard on them like I am. It is only an i3 but it is the newest series so is a bit faster than the old i5-1035G1 IIRC.

2.0Hz Intel Core i3-1125G4 quad-core processor
512GB SSD
Windows 10 Home
Free upgrade to Windows 11 when available
8GB DDR4 memory
Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution
802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax 2x2 Wi-Fi
41Wh lithium-ion battery with a run time of up to 8.25 hours
Bluetooth 5.0 provides excellent performance connection
Meets or exceeds ENERGY STAR and EPEAT Silver standards
Pair with a MU-MIMO router for a smoother online experience in multi-device homes
Go from 0 to 50% charge in approximately 45 minutes with HP Fast Charge technology

I could find any coupon codes to stack with it. Maybe some of your guys will have better luck.
Great deal, thank you. 256 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM for ~$400 would be nice; but not sure if it's possible.

OP only has 50 rep points. We need to get him over 100 right away!

I agree it looks like a good deal. Very interesting, at least, so I'm in for one.

Picking up at local Staples very soon. I will report back.

And, reps for OP! Smilie

How is this so heavy? I mean it isn't crazy but for what is in it, it is not light. I was going to pick one up for surfing the net, but I'm thinking I won't able able to see the screen outside in the sunlight Frown

Seems like a decent deal. I would just wait until windows 11 is out if you don't need a laptop now.

Save the hassle of upgrading and cleaning laptop of old files.

Its a 17" laptop, this is actually under weight for the screen size, most are 5-6 lbs. Unless youre willing to spend $1200+ for an LG gram or similar, you wont find a 3lb 17" laptop
