LTT did a test with an older Gen 4 drive and a newer Gen 3 drive and his system booted the older Gen 4 drive with no issues.

For all those PS5 users, I think there's an article that stated that Samsung is coming out with a PS5 heat sink friendly version. I'm not certain in price point or release date.

Does this still have the cache error that diminishes speeds to sub pci express 3 speeds when the cache is full? Or did they release a firmware that fixes it?

This is true. Any gen 4 will work, even if the speeds are under the recommended 5.5Gbps. The verge tested multiple games and load times were all identical, even with 3.5gbps read speeds.

It's also important to note that a ps5 will straight up refuse to boot with a gen 3 drive, though.

PS5 extra storage to play PS5 games off of need pcie 4, faster the better on PC for basically everything, although most things are imperceptible. Editing huge files is always better to have faster storage. I can tell when I'm editing video files on my pcie 3 drive vs my SATA SSD. I don't have any experience with pcie4 vs 3 though as I don't have a pcie4 drive, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be as drastic.

Mostly for PS5, they have specific "recommendations" that involve high transfer speeds
