the work-around is to use an indoor smart outlet that has dimming and run a cord outside from the garage.

This is simply an on/off. You could use Alexa to turn on your plugged in string lights and then use the app for your lights just as though they were plugged into a regular outlet, if that's what you mean.
i meant more like this -

my outdoor string lights have a dimmer switch. if I plug this into the dimmer switch, will I be able to say alexa set dimmer to 50% etc

Your dimmer switch would need to work with Alexa. Plugging something into this smart plug won't make that something smart.

Damn I keep forgetting the Kasa ones don't work with HomeKit. This is a good deal. A similar Wemo one is twice the price.

They work great with homebridge tho.

There's now a $5 coupon, FWIW. I will second that I have a couple of these and they have worked great. Considering one for my mom's house but now I'm anchored on the original deal price :-)

I'd be interested if these plugs had power monitoring. I sold off all my kasa plugs and bought truly smart plugs that have power monitoring. You can control your devices based on how much power they're consuming. Turn them off if they reach a certain cost/consumption threshold (you enter your cost per kilowatt in the app) Also if your connected device draws too much power (as in a short or voltage spike) you can safely shut it down to protect your appliance etc based on your defined max wattages. It's been a real-time energy conservation aid and is helping size a solar system for the home and batteries for the RV. I must say I haven't needed an outdoor plug yet but you can bet I'd look for one with power monitoring.

*** Just a note of caution with all of the talk here about dimming DO NOT use a dimmer on an AC motor like a fan or most appliances. It will damage your device and may start a fire.
