Never ever ever ever ever buy a blue. It's their garbage, budget line. Absolute trash. Black or go elsewhere. Green is energy efficient low performance, blue is budget line crap, black is performance, and red is NAS/backup drive line. Again, this is trash. 7 very enthusiastic thumbs down at any price. This is the trash they put in Walmart laptops from Toshiba. You've been warned. (Insert comments from people that haven't been working on computers for decades as a profession here, I'm ready... And... Go...)
I think you're mistaking this for the Green, which is what you've described.

If your system can't support an NVMe drive (and if it's 7 years old, it probably can't), this drive should be perfectly fine as a system drive, and this is a good price if you can get the discount.

Thanks, there are SATA and NVMe models both on sale. Post could be clearer to identify which versions and sizes are applicable to this deal. Not OP's fault, even the Newegg reviews cite both types.

OOPS... The email address associated with your account is not eligible for promo code BTEEBSE22.

I'll try calling support, let's see if they can honor the deal.

Support did not honor the promo code.

"The promo code BTEEBSE22 was sent to selected customers so only the customers who received the promo code via email can apply it successfully. The promo code recipient's email is selected by our Marketing team probably based on the recent purchase record or website browser record. We cannot honor you this promo code in this situation"

Dude, it's a SATA drive. And it's based on TLC 3D NAND, not QLC, with a 5-year warranty. It's perfectly fine for a data drive, or I guess even a primary drive if you can't use an NVMe SSD. WD doesn't even make a Black version of SATA SSDs, because it would be almost completely pointless, since the crappiest modern SSD can saturate the SATA bus in the vast majority of workloads.
This is a really good drive, in line with the top SATA drives like Hynix S31. See this consistent linear write speed of no less than 420 MB/s:

Had a 7 yr old i5 desktop crap out due to failed HDD, looking for a inexpensive SSD, thought i could find another $60 deal for a 500GB samsung Evo 960 here but prices seem to have skyrocketed! Anyone recommend this as a reliable system drive?
Hynix S31 500Gb was < $50 a couple of times in the past 4 months. But yeah, if you need something now, grab this one, it's a great drive given that it performs as top of the line SATA SSD drives all around: https://i2hard.ru/publications/27629/

Okay, if you're getting an NVMe drive, I would not recommend the SN550, which is WD's equivalent "Blue" drive, since they swapped out the NAND for QLC. The drive in the OP (in its various sizes/form factors) is a perfectly good SATA SSD, but you can do significantly better in the NVMe realm if performance matters to you.

I purchased this Team Group 1TB SSD (https://www.newegg.com/team-group...6820331561) for $70. Would it be in my best interest to return that and purchase a WD instead? I am planning on replacing my Xbox One X internal hard drive with this.

Geez... I already purchased the Crucial MX500 1tb ssd last week. These prices seems to go down as nvme picks up popularity.

You can't buy this unless you've gotten a targeted offer.

Could be completely anecdotal, and I love WD products in general, but this is the only SSD I've had that has ever failed on me. And I used it extremely lightly as a backup storage device inside a well ventilated case. I am sending it back to WD for RMA, but I'm not sure if I trust it. This might be the only QLC drive I've purchased. For the record, I never used more than a few GB of storage and went long periods of time without writing any data (though it always had power).

This WD Blue is much better. If you can buy it for $80, get it, and return the other one. The price difference between high and low end seems rather minuscule, only $10.

CX2 is a DRAMless basic one, very much like Crucial BX500. Can get slow-ish at times.
