There was a time when "cross trainers" made good all around shoes. These new "trainers" are specialized for the gym. They offer stable footing for exercises that involve standing still or moving side to side which is the opposite of what you would want in a shoe that is meant for moving forward (walking).

Bikes should be fine, wouldn't recommend them for treadmill running.. other more comfortable shoes out there for that. Fine for HIIT or lifting weights

I'm not sure how much has changed with the newer ones, but I have the metcon 1s and they're terrible for everyday wear. Like someone else said, they have very stiff soles so they make loud tapping noises everywhere. Mine are also super slippery and there's been a few times where I also slipped and fell on my ass in public. They work fine on gym mats though.
