They're a lot of fat people in the US; and a lot of super fit dudes too. But, 29-30 is way too small for the avg height of a male in either continent.
Some have Europeans taller than the avg US male. Both places are around 5'9 - 5'9.5.
The size you mentioned at 29-30 is for the height of a male at 5'6 - 5'7; 2 inches shorter than males on either continent.
Just for reference, I'm 5'10, 145lbs, 31x32. I'd have to shave my pelvis to fit a 29. Sometimes I can fit a 30, but they bother my hips after a day of wear. I best fit a 31, which is about right according to the linked chart. But usually wear a 32x32. By most visual standards, I'm very lean and borderline too skinny.
Appropriate weight for my height can go up another 30lbs!
Also, make sure you're measuring right above the hips and not near the bellybutton. No man wears pants that high 😆.

I am 5'9" with a 29in waist at 150lbs and I have a gut. I am in no way anorexic. Yet some dude on another comment here thinks I am just because I don't shovel down big Macs and Twinkies like him.
What is stated by both parties has been hyperbolic, you're not anorexic and most Americans aren't the fat pigs you've implied.
Most men are a size medium; Which I would consider 30-33/4. Which is why that size is typically the first to sell out.
You're just right at the appropriate height for medium, but you're below average in waist frame size.
It sounds as though you have a wirey frame. A more slender build as far as bone structure, at least in the waist than most Americans or Europeans.
If you were to view the chart I linked earlier you'd see where both parties would align and why hyperbolic statements by both has resulted in wasting my time.
