I don't know if it's just me, but I prefer routers that I can stand vertically. They use up less surface area. I wouldn't buy this one just for that reason. If you can't turn off those blue LEDs, it's a guaranteed no buy from me.

If you are concerned about this much space then you don't need the range this router provides. Yes the lights can be turned off.

Performs worse in some cases, at least with early firmware and AC clients, but for AX clients sure.

AX68U has a better main CPU from the AC86U (BCM4096) and a better 3x3 2.4G radio relative to the 2x2 SoC variant on 82U.

AX68U is pretty much an AX86U with a weaker 3x3 5G Radio. Main CPU and 2.4G are pretty much identical. Only real difference is internal mem storage/RAM on 2 disabled cores on the 4906 variant of 4908 (4 core).. Technically the AX68U has "4 cores" if we're comparing it relative to the 82U... AX68U is 2 main + 2 Radio design. 82U is 3+1 design given SoC nature.

AX68U is competitive with AX86U in terms of legacy AC performance at range, 82u falls behind, but has better AX performance due to larger MIMO. 3x3 vs 4x4. SNR helps.

I'm biased to the 68U because I feel its a "higher end" product internally, but the 82U would be competitive if real world performance matched AX86U in 5G. 82U and 86U share same AX 5G radio, but 82 performs worse for whatever reason. (Amplifiers, antennas, real world positioning etc.. )
I had the 68U and performance wise it was good. But it dropped wifi every 3 hours. Gonna get this and see.

I bought this router for $230 - 4 weeks ago from Best Buy. I have around 25 devices connected to it at all times, hardwired, 2.4g and 5g.

I'm using it to replace my Verizon FiOS modem/router and so far it's been awesome. I really love the ability to configure everything via the GUI within the webapp as well as the Android app. It does use Trend Micro for QOS and other features for those that are privacy concerned. I use my own DNS server with Adguard Home.

Range and speed is great so far, its centrally located in a 3k sqft house with two floors.

Newbie... How do you replace the Verizon fios router with this? Do you use both?

You just disconnect the Verizon router, install the Asus router app on your phone, plug this in, and use the app to find the Asus router and follow instructions.

I have an orbi mesh system for my old place. Probably will be moving soon and is considering another mesh wifi system with satellite. But how is this single router act as a mesh? Can it work together with other satellite system? And what's the strength of a gaming router vs a regular mesh router?

Can this handle more devices than a ac86u? I have between 40-50 devices and I feel like the connections are starting to get unstable.

Flash the 86u with merlin, then look into cake qos

You're confusing gaming and mesh routers. It's both a pretty solid gaming router, and it's mesh capable. You could join 6 of these via mesh if you wanted to.

A "gaming" router normally has more horsepower and firmware choices. A mesh system purely exists to improve range. If your devices are within range of a single router, get a badass router. If your devices have low signal, then extend your range via mesh.

I don't get good signal on my ground floor
before you run out and buy anything sr71 suggested, you understand that homes can have feature in them that block wifi signal from parts of it that seem to mysteriously lack wifi. it could be electric, plumbing or hvac risers in the wall or ceiling, metal lath used to reinforce arches and corners, major laundry, kitchen, and bathroom structures such as metal appliances and bathtubs, metal frame staircase, brick and cinderblock that is often used in a chimney. so before you spend anything, simply try relocating your current router so it may be angled better in a way to avoid potential wifi obstacles and penetrate to the downstairs better. there are apps you can put on your phone that ping signal strength wherever you are in the house, that can help you find the best sweet spot. i did this for my router in a 2200 sqft home, and it turned out a central in my home, shoulder height inside wall of a hallway closet - that got my wifi everywhere - https://i.imgur.com/Pjo4kFC.jpg so that's where i installed it, out of sight, but working at it's best.

got mine yesterday at Best Buy for $170, excellent router, now I get almost full download speeds in all upstairs and downstairs bedrooms, upload is still the same as my old ac68u router which I planned to use as part of mesh but probably don't need to as speed and range is good enough for my 1800sf home.

Thanks. I have 68u now and want this. Was considering using the aimesh but maybe this will make it pointless

This is only true if you're only using FiOS for internet. If you have TV or Phone through the service this isn't the case.

These Asus gaming routers have a QOS feature that prioritizes gaming traffic and supposedly reduces latency.

Gotta say that I have the ax88u and the gaming features are questionable as to how helpful they are. I've had all sorts of latency issues streaming gamepass or stadia games over wifi with it on that are fixed when turned off. This might not be the case if you're running a wired connection or dealing with so much congestion that gaming is unplayable otherwise, but in my experience buying these routers for their "gaming" features just isn't worth it.
