I bought this TV in February from Best Buy for $1389+tax. Very happy with it.
amazon QnA seems to agree:

Q: Does this tv support 120 hz?
A: Yes, but not at 4K. You can get 120 Hz at 1440p and 1080p.
I have had absolutely terrible luck with TCL TVs. My first one was very nice but the 3 I have tried since then have been garbage breaking down in 6 months.

The flagship 8 series was less than 1500 last year. I feel this should be like 999.
Supply chain shortages are basically dictating prices this year. Nothing any consumer can do about it.

I had 55" of this TV. It's a good TV but I'd never EVER PAY $1300 for it!! It's just simply not worth it

I have it and love it. Had about 8 months, no complaints. Best bang for the buck.

That's odd. I've had absolutely terrible luck with Samsung TVs, every one I have bought has broken. My only reliable TV has been my 55" TCL 4 series.

I must have rotten luck.

Beware!!! Roku support is crap and they don't respond for any issues . If you are out of warranty, then roku updates bricks tv of different brands. And there is no fix for it and you will end up dumping the TV
LOL, do you know how you sound?

Do you have any citation for the "known" ROKU updates bricking TVs en mass?

This is not a 2021 TV, this is the 2020 model. Don't buy what Amazon tells you there.
This does not have HDMI 2.1 ports (4k @120)
As far as TCL and trustworthiness:

I bought one after friend's went 5 years with no issues, to replace a Vizio. Haven't been happier. In fact, I'm so happy, I went and bought another 2 more. One was a s6, the original 2 were s4's. All running like a dream. I have to say, I'm impressed with the quality of the TVs, and the product itself at the TCL cost

Check it out yourself... I had a roku tv and it bricked!!! Literally, out of no where it just goes into boot loop. You will see the latest comment in the below community.

Maybe, but supply chain shortages cannot dictate price paid. Sit on the sidelines. When product finally arrives, the glut will result in a historic price crash. Save some money for that.

Roku lacks the resources to manage updates across a diverse product line. As a consequence, updates are created and tested for current products and shoehorned into 'legacy' products. That is why I do not purchase Roku streamers. That said, I have never experienced this with TCL Roku TVs. Following your link, I think this is true for you as well as the link discusses issues with Sharp/Hisense products.

My first HD TV was a 50" Samsung plasma. Still takes my breath away after more than a decade.

Here's why I love this television…
  • ...
  • It's tricky. Plug a 16g USB 2.0 thumb drive into this television and you will be able to pause, rewind, and fast forward through 90 minutes of television. This television does not record programs, but it does most of the things we do with a DVR.

I agree with most of what you wrote and also love my TCL Roku TVs. As a nitpick, I think the 90min recording is limited to the program you are watching on one channel, so not exactly 90 minutes of television, 90 minutes of one channel. For example, if you pause the football game you can't flip over to see the score in the other game with it paused.
Not really a nit pick. It's a fact. The thumb drive is used to buffer 90 minutes of the currently playing channel -- the ability to pause, rewind, and fast forward (through commercials) is know as trick play. Sorry for the confusion. Awesome feature, though, right?

I have a 2017 50in 4 series still kickin (knock on wood, pretty nice TV for what it is too) but TCL TVs are a complete total and absolute crapshoot. If you are lucky enough to get past their seemingly atrocious quality control, they're nice and a very good value. More common though unfortunately, you'll be happy with it for a year then it'll go ahead and just completely break at month 13 or whatever…

This or the Sony X90j for $200 more?

This seems to have a bit better specs but is TCL and not sure I will even utilize the extra brightness,

I have one of these. Was my main TV for a while.

The main issue I have with the TV is the lag displaying the image. My setup was the following: Media Box (Apple TV, NVidia Shield) -> Sony Receiver (Sony STR-DN1080) -> this TV. The audio would be around 250ms ahead of the video. The receiver can delay the audio, but it's really close to the limit (300ms). Our previous Vizio P series (2017) didn't have that issue, nor does the LG C1 that replaced it.

I moved it up to another room, using ARC and a Sonos Arc. Seems to work fine in that configuration (Apple TV -> TV -> Arc).
