Editor's Notes & Price Research

  • About this deal:
    • These prices are $13 Lower (27% Savings) than the list price of $47.98.
    • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars from over 7,700 reviews.
  • About this product:
    • This trash can operates with infrared motion sensor technology to allow you to simply wave your hand above the sensor at the front of the lid to open it automatically. The lid will remain open as long as there is an object in front of the sensor and close gently five seconds after the object is removed. If a hand or object breaks the infrared beam between the lid and the sensor while it's closing, re-triggering technology opens the lid again to prevent lid from closing on your hand.

this is arguably slightly more effort than having a step-on trash can, i can attest to that since i've used both

also, this can takes much more work when replacing the trash bag. in a step-on can, you prop up the lid, and pull out the bag. in this can however, you completely pull out the top, then pull out the ring that sits between the top and the main body of the trash can, and THEN get the trash bag out. and then once you replace the bag, you have to put the ring and the top back in place.... overall much more work than one might imagine

but i will still prefer this can, because it's just so much cooler!
Those 5000mAh lipstick USB batteries will fit in there, just need to slice a USB cable into the battery terminals. One charge can last 1-2 weeks.

Don't use it for the kitchen, as soon as you wash it, all the gears will rust and the circuit board will die eventually. I tried, even took out the circuit board and sprayed a few layers of PlastiDip to waterproof it before hand, died a year in. Still nice using it manually. I'm currently in the process of building an external auto-opener with either Arduino or Pi Zero with proximity sensors and a motor, the idea is to hook a string to lift/lower the lid. That way, I can still wash the lid every bag change as I'm doing now.

I bought the white on the last time this was a deal. I have been very pleased with it. Can't beat this price.

I'm not paying $35 for a trash can
y'know, i would've said the same thing a few years back, but now, i don't know...i'm getting pretty dang lazy in my old age...it might be worth shelling out for trash can that opens itself...my cheapness and my laziness are fighting each other over this one right now

Pretty sure this is exactly the Sims price. If you sell it when it's full soon after buying it, you can get all your money back and never have to empty your trash!

Heads up if you go wireless, this thing drains batteries. Invest in rechargeable ones.

You make excellent points there, and as an engineer, coolness of gizmos is a very important factor to me. Wink

An Arduino or Pi operated trash can...now *that* would be pretty darn cool! Cool2

How do these compare to the Insignia ones that often go on sale?

I've had this for over a year. I really like it.

And I still haven't had to replace the batteries even once, and I probably open it 5 to 10 times per day
