Over time I have tinkered with several note/stylus phones and I have basically come to the conclusion that I myself don't use them (or even remember that my devices have them). Kudos to those that use them though.

I am just curious, for the people who love/have to have them, what do you guys use stylus/note functionality for on your devices? What feature makes it indispensable for you?
Quote from Ride_The_Sky :
Whip it out and take notes on the spot, draw arrows etc (i guess you can do it with your finger) sign documents (i guess you can sign once and save your signature), play games that are impossible to play without stylus like Picross type games, I think some people use it as remote shutter or shortcuts, extract text from pictures (i suppose other phones can do it but I am not sure if they can without 3rd party app). But just taking it out and taking notes without any apps etc is biggest benefit.

All the above mentioned. The most recent thing I used mine for was tracing house wiring runs in my attic. I took pictures, then used the stylus to draw red or blue lines to mark on the pix which lines were hot vs. common. This is old knob-n-tube that I'm looking to rewire with Romex. I can then study how I want to rewire, outside the confines of the attic.

I had several Moto phones a couple years back and eventually gave them all away.
My concerns with Moto phones are such:
1 - the cameras rate good but are NOT
2 - some sort of update comes out and makes the phone terrible. Once it made battery life such that I could no longer get through a full work day, once it just made everything run slow. Both of these were fixed by a full wipe and reload but that's just irritating.

Off the top of my head I think I had a Moto G5, G5S plus, X4 and then a G7.

Made the switch to a pixel 3 xl when I saw a decent deal come up and it's served me well for the past year and a half now. Pictures are always great and updates haven't caused problems.

What phone are you using or which direction did you go? I am comparing most recent Samsung phones and they all miss something or have disadvantage, why couldn't they make one and combine good stuff. No SD card was the worst, but Note20 Ultra has that. Headphone jack is completely gone, no more. One reason why we love the A71, such a nice phone, got it for $300 well worth every penny.
Seems like still S21 Ultra is the most likely to be Note replacement especially with 5000mAh battery, faster processor and best ppi among recent samsungs, closest to Note 8.
I may not be the most representative person to ask...I use the note 9 for my teaching work and need the pen to sketch hints to problem sets or to do highlights on PDF files. So I am ok using the phone until it falls apart. But at home, I use both the 8 and the 9.

I will probably go the direction of the newer Pixel "A" phones since they maintain the headphone jack and keep pushing the envelope on photo quality. I will need to set up local backup on my LAN to substitute the role of the SD card.

Need a phone for a 12year old who can't seem to stop breaking them.
Needs to work on Verizon.

I was thinking of getting this as his last option.

But pixel 3 xl is same price so why not get that? Better camera and app support.
Because the battery's are garbage and suffer from EDL issues now. And the notch is pure garbage.

I believe the consensus is that the Pixel 3A has a better camera. Sample photos that folks have posted taken on the 2020 Moto G Stylus might give you an idea whether or not the camera on this phone is sufficient for you:

Make the 12 year old pay for their next phone if they break a smartphone. Until then, they can use a flip phone. Makes them so much more careful, just amazing.

I'm sure 12 year olds are pretty sophisticated these days but if yours doesn't know any difference, I'd consider saving $30 and getting a $170 Moto G Power 3/32GB and add a cheap rugged case. It's only $10 more for the 4/64GB version.

Using a 2020 Moto g stylus now and I love this phone. Have had it for a year. I think I paid $250 and fully expect it to last another year without issue. I cant believe the value this phone is.

Just my 2 cents: Android phones get ~3 years of OS and security updates. After ~2 years the security updates go from monthly updates to every 3 months. This phone was launched about 1.5 years ago. If you get it, I wouldn't plan on using it for longer than 18 months (if that).

I definitely wouldn't get any pixel 3 model.

Lots of different phones out there, but I would not take a risk with security.

Interesting, had to google the EDL thing. I just bought a Pixel 3 in August for family and plan to get another one. With manufacturer warranty + credit card get 3 years warranty which is plenty. The accupower indicates no battery degradation so far.

Really like the pixel camera and screen quality. The no sdcard is annoying but I don't need much storage. The biggest consideration for me is camera quality. With power banks and fast charging its not as critical for me to have a large battery. I have the moto z2 force, but it never got any Android OS updates and the last security update is from 2+yrs ago. Great phone though, like the unbreakable screen and the Moto gestures.

This phone looks great but would prefer a better camera.
