I hate this site. Recently I bought an Apple Watch charger that gets hot and doesn't charge. And then I bought a Logitech keyboard mouse set that was supposed to be new but the serial numbers were removed and were proven to be refurbished by Logitech. Beware.

FYI: Not compatible with the Kasa app so don't bother with these if you're tied into that ecosystem.

No Kasa? Hmm. What is this Tapo App and why the heck didn't they stick with Kasa support?? ok, so it supports Alexa and Google assistant so do I care if it's not supported by Kasa? I started with the zwave ecosystem and Samsung SmartThings hub but now have bought some other wifi controlled devices because they were cheaper. tp link has worked well for me but not sure I'm ready to install yet another app to initially set them up and adjust scheduled timers etc...

Wow for a second there I thought the title said Teapo and I got bad flashbacks of the failed capacitor saga from ~10 years ago.

For those of you who are curious as I was. I am pretty happy overall with our Kasa ecosystem of plugs, bulbs, and switches and I was wondering what the heck TP-Link Tapo was and why they are releasing a completely separate line of products.

Looks like Tapo is Tp links budget line and can only be controlled via local network access. Kasa can be controlled anywhere as long as your home network is connected to the internet and your smartphone has internet access (or computer).

Dumb that they split the product line. Have several of the Kasa products.

I have been using these and g*sund for over the past year and they both work exceptionally well. Have em all hooked up to the Google home and Amazon echos and they are the best things to have especially for the holidays turning off and on the lights throughout the house. I'm a nut for Christmas lights and i tell ya if you're like me, you need smart lights or plugs so you can say Google turn off the lights or Ziggy (or alexa/echo) turn on the lights etc

Just got a G*sund power strip, and it's quick to respond to Google Home commands.

With all of these smart home switches (urlhasbeenblocked, TP-Link kasa, Wyze, etc.), do they work via local network when you're controlling from home, or do all of them send your commands over to their servers and then back?

I'm wondering if relegating the smart home devices to the guest network without local network access will hamper their responsiveness.

I use kasa only on the local network. I don't have a TP-Link account. I had to send some direct command line commands to get a few of them on my network, and from there the app has no problem seeing them. They still "phone home" I believe to keep their clocks set. Firmware updates are done through the app though.
Google home and echo only work over the internet. Their servers tell kasa servers to turn on a light and kasa servers tell the smart plug. No direct connection. It won't hurt those if you're using a separate IOT network for your devices.

This is the way. Put them in their own VLAN/LAN with maximum IP/DNS filtering. These damn things love using ipv6 and DNS over TLS to try to get around it, too.

Interesting. Just wondering how would this help more? Thanks.
