Uptime. Windows restarts ALL THE TIME for NO REASON. Unless you've already removed all that, it's really annoying to have your plex server restart. So I use a NAS for uptime, and just ease of use. I use UNRAID personally. Also for some redundancy in case a HDD dies, I have 2 parity drives to save me from 2 failures. Anymore and well, I'm screwed Smilie

I also use a server chassis for it instead of a normal tower for more HDDs. I can fit 24 vs however I could fit in a PC. Previous NAS was 15. Having the server chassis is nice for the easy hotswap HDDs cages for easy swapping of HDDs. Before, it was a pain having to open the whole PC up for HDD additions.
I don't have the restart issues with Windows 10. You need to run Windows 10 pro. Then you can disable the auto updates in Group Policy Editor (gpedit). If you're on the home version, you're screwed. Spaceinvaderone on YouTube has a website he buys keys from for <$10. That's where I got my key. I believe it's in part two of setting up a Windows 10 vm.

A standard PC with a bunch of drives in there would work fine, but a NAS gives you all kinds of options for raiding your drives right out of the box. Most standard PC's will not offer raid. The primary purpose of raid is for performance reasons but can also be used for data redundancy.. People usually get bent out of shape about that, but it's true to some extent. If a drives fails it gives me enough time to replace it without losing data or system downtime. Also, they are usually a means of lower power consumption as opposed to a beefier PC's that do offer raid.
Windows supports many different software raid options and "storage spaces" too. I'm not saying you should, just that it does.

Nothing is stopping you from just not using all the space
Never thought of that. But you can use larger drives than the parity and just lose the space. Still, I think I will wait for the 12s at 175ish again.

Amex also has the $25 back on $250 spend, so this can go towards that.

grabbed one, thanks OP. got to use a bunch of gift cards too, so that's a plus. 14gb was more than I need, but it's a good deal and I'll eventually use it.

on a side note, does anyone know of a super cheap USB NAS? something like a USB-to-Ethernet (or WiFi) adapter. the parts to make one are probably like $5 (could probably do it with an ESP8266 or ESP32), but I've not seen any...

I think it will go down to $179
Don't listen to these fools. This is a freakin great deal. If you can get it into the mid 15/tb then that's the sweet spot. This is well below this. Yes, it MIGHT go down more. But this sale is ridiculously good.

Are these SMR drives? (which typically shouldn't be used in RAID arrays)

Not to mention they clearly state they will match any price changes through the holiday unless of course you're shucking them. Honestly with all the shortages this year I was thinking we might not see this deal this year. You can't beat this deal. This is a no-brainer. If you find something better take it back.

From the Best Buy reviews on this drive people are stating that this is not an SMR drive. The latest review is from 1 month ago about SMR. Now did WD change something? Who knows until people start getting them.
