More like 1mg for me. But I definitely agree that 10mg is WAY too much.
300mcg is all you need
Please guys do your research on melatonin..I used it for decades being in college and then when working nightshift as a nurse...even transitioning to day shift I did.

However there are multiple studies that show melatonin is not a great supplement. Can lead to anxiety depression. And kills your dopaminergic drive aka less motivated to get moving and do stuff. I am currently still experimenting on whats best to use albeit small microdoses of melatonin did in fact work. (I bit a small peice off a 3mg pill..can easily last 5-10 nights but I'm not even worried if I throw the piece out)

Although like I previously mentioned, I no longer use it for the main fact that it can inhibit dopamine which far outweighs the sleep benefits.

5mg puts me right to sleep but gives me horror-movie nightmares that have me awake after 5hrs of sleep. If you are new to taking melatonin, start small and work up slowly as needed.

The Costco sleep aid tabs with doxylamine succinate are worse, those make me groggy for 12+ hrs even with half a pill.

To each their own. I've taken melatonin for years and don't get nightmares. Excited to see 10mg on sale. 5mg works ok but personally anything lower is useless.

It's always good to see the SD armchair doctors come out and give their GoogleU based medical opinions on things.

Right?!? It's hilarious to see all these clowns arguing with each other. It would be even more disturbing to think that there are people out there making medical decisions based on what people on a random internet forum say....

reading all these comments, I'm almost afraid to say I take 50 mg at night for like months at a time and that barely helps me sleep if not at all. Should I be concerned about any side effects 😳 ?

This is the scariest thing I've read on the internet all day.

If you take this much for the first time you will wake up with a very bad headache. The most you should be taking is 1mg. It's better to take L-Tryptophan or 5-HTP. It does give you nightmares. If you really want to have nightmares take L-theanine. I used it once and had one of the worst nightmares of my life.

normally yes, but this is not a drug in the traditional sense, this is a hormone

and in fact taking too much, i.e. 5 mg can cause unintended consequences, such as not even being able to fall asleep

do this

30-45 minutes before you plan to lie down in bed
take 300mcg (ideally liquid dropper you can measure)
at 30 minutes, lay down in bed, maybe tv on or some music for next 15-20 minutes, but lights off
after 15-20 minutes, turn the tv/music off and see if it works for you

I see what you're getting at, but bear in mind that liquid melatonin is intended to be left under the tongue to be absorbed by the blood vessels. This product is intended to be digested rather than soaked in the mouth. As far as digestion is concerned, your stomach doesn't absorb anything and is just there to break down whatever enters. It's possible that much of the melatonin will be broken down in the stomach before it reaches the small intestine (the first area of the digestive tract where absorption takes place). Since you aren't marinating the blood vessels in your mouth with 10mg of melatonin, I wouldn't worry about it. The thing with melatonin is its delayed onset, hence why it's recommended to take it under the tongue to speed up the onset. Taking it orally and swallowing will take longer than your proposed method, but could be ideal with dinner.

I'm backing off melatonin. Apparently a study showed that supplements can range from something like 15% to over 400x what's advertised on the bottle. Also, it can cause delayed puberty in kids. It's kinda weird that you can buy a hormone over the counter but here we are.

Slickdeals is acting funky from desktop to app.

to everyone who quoted me. (Tastyratz comment) this is exactly what i was referring to. Huberman's podcast goes in depth on why melatonin is detrimental. something i've known for a while but to not the extent of affecting dopamine. upon further research, the claims are more factually based than not. my previous mentions of possibly affecting anxiety and depression are also true and what i've known since my inception of starting to take melatonin exogenously.

it is known that high dose melatonin can be neuroprotective. but that is in certain cases and not meant to be done daily.. as in 10mg/night. noone should regularly dose this amount nightly. it should be used for "certain" instances.

it is a hormone and can down regulate natural production, while also messing with the bodies natural circadian rhythms. we should look to augment sleep in other ways that do not predispose the body to hormonal imbalances further affecting different pathways that one not might entirely know about.

yes we need sleep. but we need restful sleep that will make us be awake and alert enough to "hunt" the next day. allow your eyes to absorb natural sunlight daily via direct sunlight not inhibited by a window or glass. bluelight filters, dim lights past 7pm is the way to move towards sleep efficiency. and look into other modalities for supplementation!

if you must use melatonin...try the 300mcg method. it works better than you might think
