No need to be rude. I'm getting this for someone else, and I'm not very familiar with Chromebooks in general.
I got this last time when it was on sale. It has a web cam and a card slot.
Yes they can.

OK show me a Chromebook I3 new for $149 or so. Half the price. One with a 2k screen.

This is a great price for most people it should work great.

He was talking about the newer version without the minor limitations of this one (like lack of SD card) is double the price of this model.

This is a great deal. But looks this doesn't have SD card slot, which I was interested in.

This is 100% incorrect.

I own this model and the micro SD slot is to the left of the headphone/microphone jack on the left hand side.

Curious, what are you planning on storing locally?
A different OS! These things can run a lite-Linux very nicely. 4G RAM is a little anorexic, but I've been running Linux in 64GB storage devices for years. Linux isn't Windows. It doesn't need 60G for the OS.
My bloated desktop Linux OS is using 11G now - not including the 4.1G swap area.
If ChromeOS supported NFS, I might not need to wipe it.
The size and display make this a deal.
Chromebook Spin 713 CP713-2W-3311 seems to be the exact model for comparisons elsewhere. Looks to be heavy at 3.2 lbs.
I need to look up whether this specific model can have the firmware replaced, SSD replaced and perhaps add another RAM stick. I'm not a fan of eMMC storage.
Had a Toshiba 2015 13in chromebook that was under 2lbs with 10 hrs of battery. Beautiful, light, machine, also a Core i3. 15in is too large. 11in is too small. At least for me and my eyes. Swore I'd never get any laptop without 8G of RAM again. 4G is just a little too tight, especially with iGPU stealing RAM for video needs.

I'd like to know this too. It looks like it has potential as a Linux laptop.

Seems a full UEFI is supported. Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-2W) KLED using CR50 firmware. This will prevent ChromeOS from being reloaded. I don't know what this specific model uses to write protect the firmware - my very old Acer had a write protect screw that had to be removed with a scratch-off area around the screw to make the electrical connection to allow writing to the firmware.

This guy was able to replace the SSD (M.2 NVMe). [reddit.com] Unfortunately, the RAM appears to be soldered. Here's a better look at the relevant bits. [acsofmiami.com]

Does anyone whether you can use a CCD cable to load Ubuntu or Gallium directly onto the metal? And if so how well it runs/works?

I tried the mrchomebox.tech firmware and installed XUbuntu. Keyboard worked but no backlighting. Touchpad worked too but not like on ChromeOS and was buggy. Eventually I reinstalled ChromeOS because of things not working as good as they do on ChromeOS. You have to use the battery method to turn off write protect.

If they spend their time on the web then it will be great. They have Android app support. It's great with simplicity for kids or grandparents, but also streamlined for it's main purpose as a portal to the web.

While the 4GB is on the lower side, this is still plenty competent without too many tabs/multitasking and has a great keyboard and screen. Speakers are pretty weak FYI

The model he replaced with an NVME uses a SATA drive, not soldered in eMMC.

I've taken this 64GB one apart to replace the thermal paste and the NVME connector is not soldered on. The pads are there, though.

A micro SD card slot is present, but I use a low profile USB 3.1 drive. It's much faster.

Hi nxsteven, I follow practice of referring/updating my important files through data on SD card. The SD card has ability to get inserted into laptop and remains hidden so my kids can't pull it off. So was looking for Chromebook which supports SD card.

That's my point, this is an excellent deal compared to the newer model. Is the new one worth two of these? Yes and no depending of the situation, the $529 is an excellent choice if you need to do more work since is better equipped, no it's not worth 2 of these if $279 was the regular price but it is not.

I paid 650 for the i5/8gb/256g version of this Chromebook last year and it's a great laptop even at that price. The screen is gorgeous!
