The firmware and software on this series is absolute garbage. Casting from a phone is delayed and rarely works. VUDU doesn't work at all. Apps randomly crash and require a power cycle. Won't wake when attempting to cast from a phone. Can't connect sony Bluetooth headphones. The only Bluetooth headphones I can get to connect have a 1/2 second delay behind video. It's not just my set. Read the reviews

HiSense U8G was under $1000, which is superior to this TV per Rtings. I bought the HiSense and have been very happy.

I just picked this up 2 hours ago from best buy. This thing is heavy at 65 lbs. The screen was super bright and nice colors but I lost the panel lottery- had 3 dark spots on the screen so it's going back tomorrow.

If you don't mind getting last year's model (which would be the 2020 model "65R635" running Roku OS, instead of this 2021 model "65R646" running Google TV),
then Amazon is still the best deal for the TCL 6-series 65" at $898 (link [amazon.com])
... as long as you have (or can get) the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card (5% cashback on all Amazon purchases + 5% extra for this particular TV = 10% off).

Just applied for the Amazon card, got insta-approved (free instant $200 Amazon GC), and bought the 2020 TV.

but note that one of the biggest differences, Local Dimming, is probably less than it looks like because RTings used a 55" when they tested the 2020 model. In their own words [rtings.com], "The 65" and 75" models also have more dimming zones, so they may perform better.".

Now I have to decide whether to cancel the order and buy this marginally better TV for ~$90 more... (probably more like $45 if using some other kind of cashback)... leaning yes...

Where are you finding this tv on amazon? i've been looking and couldn't find it on there. I checked that link you posted but it's just a list of a bunch of different products and i couldn't find it after scouring for it. do you have a link to the exact tv? thanks in advance!

I just got the 75 r646 version of this TV great picture overall but it has some backlight local dimming issues I can't get past the screen uniformity bothers me I know not every panel is the same but I can't get past the dirty screen effect or brighter areas on parts of the screen. Other than that its a really nice image but the quality control is not that great IMHO, also one thing to be noted is Dolby vision is dim and washed out looking probably a software issue but none the less an issue. I was going to have Best Buy switch it out which they were happy to, infact they even offered to bring a new one and take the old one for free. But after looking at the numerous reviews I'm going to take the plunge and get the x90j as it actually reviews better that XR processing is a thing of beauty and well its a Sony I expect the quality control and backlight issue to be superior as that is the general consensus on how it's reviewed. So just beware and good luck on the TCL panel lottery.

I just picked this up 2 hours ago from best buy. This thing is heavy at 65 lbs. The screen was super bright and nice colors but I lost the panel lottery- had 3 dark spots on the screen so it's going back tomorrow.

Just pulled the trigger on this. Anybody have a good guide on testing the tv for black uniformity and dirty screen effect? Maybe other test to see how lucky am I with the panel lottery.

Change your background to a flat uniform dark grey color, hook up your computer to it.

All black for light bleed, turn off fald local dimming

a dark grey blue for other mura defects.

Roku menu is pretty basic looking but functional and easy to navigate. Google menu looks more like a Netflix menu with background pictures and your content curated on the homescreen.

Depends on your preference really, but IMO roku menus just look like a 1998 DVD player menu to me, boring as hell. Functionality wise there's no huge glaring difference in performance or features aside from easier to navigate settings in Roku.

I picked up the 2020 model on Amazon but will hook up Nvidia shield to replace the TV's OS.

Can try massaging the screen lightly w a microfiber cloth. Apparently that helps sometimes. GL
