There's comments like this in every MacBook Air M1 thread, but have no clue what they're talking about. Look into how this thing actually performs instead of thinking it's the same as the Intel chipsets with 8gb of ram.

A year old laptop that is going to run circles around any other comparably priced laptop.

Costco has two years warranty, so that's a plus

A developer here with m1 mba 8gb unified memory.
Those of you waiting for deals on 16gb models - Apple doesn't sell them in store, nor can you buy one in Best Buy or other store. 16gb IS A CUSTOM ORDER MBA. If stores like B&H would be selling them with discount, that would be their inventory of custom ordered MBAs.

To those, who doesn't understand unified memory - I had an XPS with I-9750 and 32Gb of ram before. MBA performance is more seamless.
I run a server, containerization system, 3 browsers with 100+ tabs, slack, zoom, Spotify, dozen other apps, and figma with 12Gb design files. I don't feel any slug (sometimes when I add double the tabs, it can happen, closing an unused browser stops the issue) but my swap is at 8-10 Gb. Ideally I would get 16gb but when I was ordering it after it came out, wait time was 45+ days.
This thing is a beast, compared to my xps 15 w/ i7.
People really have to do their research re: unified memory.

Too many "LMAOOOOOOO 8gb in 2021" comments.

Looks like my display on my MacBook Pro 2016 model, 15 inch ,i7 16gb ram is gone. It's about 650$ to replace retina display. Any suggestions . .Should I replace that or get MBA ?
Going to M1 for another $150 seems like an easy decision, esp. w/ the greatly improved power management.

You can still get recoup costs by selling your 2016 for a good amount.

Exaggerate much? Here's something that's not an exaggeration: I can't use my professional Canon photo printer with the M1 MBP because the drivers are incompatible. Some of us do more than just browse the web. If I saw a 16" MBP on sale for $1400 I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat.
Parallels?

Given how cheap rams are these day. Apple is deliberately setting a lower bar so not to cannibalize their more "premium" line of laptops.

You shouldnt have to use additional software to create a virtual OS to run the software you want. And also Apple said Rosetta is a temporary solution they would remove after M1 products were in the market for long enough, meaning emulating x86 is going away at some point.

This is the whole reason my brother, who wanted to onboard M1 macbook airs for his company (hes the IT director), had to give up on that idea. They wouldnt run the proprietary applications they license and didnt want to train employees to jump through the hoops of emulation to get them working. Its too much of a headache.

Never owned an apple product in my life.
Guess it's time to change that with this. Have heard nothing but great reviews.

Just hope I can make the transition from being a decades old windows user to MacOS.
Yes - the M1 chip is great and the battery life is great - BUT...

The MacBook uses a PWM display. That's "Pulse Width Modulation" and it screws around with the frames to save power. You don't notice anything right away but if you are sensitive to PWM your eyes and vision get really weird after an hour or so. Even after leaving the laptop your vision can stay screwed-up for awhile. I had to take the Mac back to Micro Center. There are a lot of people posting about the PWM issue

There is also an issue with the MacBook displays cracking. There is already a class action lawsuit underway.. Personally I would skip the first gen M1s.

Class-action lawsuit filed for M1 MacBook screen cracks

lol, 8gb ram, back to the past? Nowadays 16gb ram is pretty much the standard and soon 32gb will be the standard...
looks like we have sm1 who is oblivious to the efficiencies of iOS/MacOS
same way as iOS smokes Androids with double the RAM, MacOS with M1 handles processes so much more efficiently with integrated RAM
look up any review
and add to that my ( and many others') personal experience
