There's comments like this in every MacBook Air M1 thread, but have no clue what they're talking about. Look into how this thing actually performs instead of thinking it's the same as the Intel chipsets with 8gb of ram.

A year old laptop that is going to run circles around any other comparably priced laptop.

Costco has two years warranty, so that's a plus

lol, 8gb ram, back to the past? Nowadays 16gb ram is pretty much the standard and soon 32gb will be the standard...
You going get a lot of negativity towards your opinion. The negativity is the Apple fanboys. Baaahhhhh….

This might get some hate, but I like bigger screens and I only use my laptop at my desk. But I was thinking of hooking this up to a monitor and using as a desktop basically. Thoughts on this? I haven't found anything desktop wise with this performance at this price range.
Why not just get the m1 Mac mini

It would work great doing that.

I've read that most cases for this do not fit properly or crack easily. Stick with decals and sleeve? This is for my daughter who will be going to college in the fall. Also, do you recommend a mouse or is the trackpad sufficient?
The trackpad is consistent and great on this machine so most people will be satisfied with it. I haven't really used a PC laptop trackpad that compares. The Magic Mouse is a pretty sweet mouse if you do want one that leverages Mac OS features (e.g. you can use two fingers to swipe left and right on the mouse body to swap between last used app). I also use a MX Master 3 with my PC and highly recommend that as well.

If she's in college she's probably going to be using it portable majority of the time vs. stationary. If that's the case, a mouse is probably not going to be used much.

I read the specs and there are two thunderbolt 3 ports which means you can connect two monitors. I also use my laptop as a desktop for work and connect two monitors for a triple screen setup.

Can this laptop connect with 2 monitors for a triple monitor setup?

A developer here with m1 mba 8gb unified memory.
Those of you waiting for deals on 16gb models - Apple doesn't sell them in store, nor can you buy one in Best Buy or other store. 16gb IS A CUSTOM ORDER MBA. If stores like B&H would be selling them with discount, that would be their inventory of custom ordered MBAs.

To those, who doesn't understand unified memory - I had an XPS with I-9750 and 32Gb of ram before. MBA performance is more seamless.
I run a server, containerization system, 3 browsers with 100+ tabs, slack, zoom, Spotify, dozen other apps, and figma with 12Gb design files. I don't feel any slug (sometimes when I add double the tabs, it can happen, closing an unused browser stops the issue) but my swap is at 8-10 Gb. Ideally I would get 16gb but when I was ordering it after it came out, wait time was 45+ days.
This thing is a beast, compared to my xps 15 w/ i7.
fake news. a person having 3 browsers opened with 100+ tabs and over a dozen apps open at the same time. does this person know how to use a computer. i saw a youtube video once a 10 year old girl having 8 MacBook pro laptops. one for playing hello kitty great adventures island, the other playing paintbrush...reminds me of her.

There are bigger problems to worry like the 256GB drive which fills up quick IMO and even worse, the 2 USB ports

Yes - the M1 chip is great and the battery life is great - BUT...

The MacBook uses a PWM display. That's "Pulse Width Modulation" and it screws around with the frames to save power. You don't notice anything right away but if you are sensitive to PWM your eyes and vision get really weird after an hour or so. Even after leaving the laptop your vision can stay screwed-up for awhile. I had to take the Mac back to Micro Center. There are a lot of people posting about the PWM issue

There is also an issue with the MacBook displays cracking. There is already a class action lawsuit underway.. Personally I would skip the first gen M1s.

Class-action lawsuit filed for M1 MacBook screen cracks

PWM?? That's hard to believe on a device such as MacBook.
But man, that's a bummer. That's a deal breaker for me for sure if that's true.

I previously purchased this for 850 and haven't opened it. Still in the 90 day window. Do I need to return and rebuy to get a price adjustment or can I simply call them?
i know best buy will refund the difference, so i would assume costco would as well. don't quote me on that, but yeah, i think so.

Yay a year old laptop.
What does that mean? FYI the I7 chip came out in 2008. Yay a 12 year old processor chip vs a new designed state of the art chip.

Superb machine. I've had it for a while and there's absolutely nothing that it can't handle when it comes to average user's needs. This is probably one of my favorite  products. The battery life is insanely good. I got mine for $750 at Best Buy, but this is easily worth whatever price Apple asks for it. Nonetheless, stick with the $800 price tag lol. I'll be upgrading my iMac to M1 pretty soon as well.
