a) a Weber gas grill that gets really hot, really fast, and I have a little smoker box that I can add in there to add some wood smoke flavor to things.
b) a Weber kettle grill that I can put charcoal in and get a little better flavor, but which needs a lot more time and attention.
c) an electric smoker tower (mini-fridge style) that does a great low-and-slow job for ribs, etc., but requires a lot more attention and cleanup.
And, honestly, my standard for excellence is about steaks. I like them rare on the inside, seared with maximum crust on the outside, and only occasionally with some smoke flavor. The best steaks I've had at restaurants seem to be seared in a cast iron pan, so as to achieve maximum crust coverage. FWIW, I'm a huge au poivre fan. So, some of the best steaks can be done inside on my stovetop.
So do I really want a device that is going to require a lot of extra time and effort to get what might be, at best, a minor flavor upgrade? Yet, here I am, still thinking about it.

Grill(lump gives way better flavor than gas or briquettes.) simply add flavor to the steaks which are great for fattier cuts eg. ribeye or ribeye caps yet make little difference for filet IMO.
Back on the thread, the Joe Jr. could perfectly replace your weber kettle, it's easy to cook even on weekdays and has very low maintenance.
If the mobility could justify that price tag for you.
there are a bunch of similar controllers but i have been using flame boss for a while and it seems to be pretty solid.
connects to wifi. install app on your phone or tablet. put in enough fuel for your cook. connect pit thermometer, insert meat thermometer. set pit temp in app, set meat temp, set alarm. and you dont have to manage the fire. or you can manage the pit anywhere you have an internet connection.
