Why not just buy this and trade in to Best Buy for the 13 mini? Upgrading from 12 to 13 costs about $80 (assuming you're not in CA where the tax is much higher) so you're looking at paying under $400 for a new iPhone 13. You could even upgrade to a higher end 13 for a few more $. The BBY deal is probably one of the best ones this year if you have an iPhone 12:

I have Total Wireless, and plan to keep the device for 12 months anyway. Note that the referral program is generous, and you can essentially go the first 5 months for a total cost of $50 for the service using the referral codes ($25 each of the first 2 months, and the next 3 come free with the code ... this if you don't use much data, or 4 months if using more data) (you can add as you need) ... and it's Verizon towers ...

I have had good luck with the Total Wireless service. Got a deal on an iPhone XR last year for around 225 and have been using service with Total Wireless since then. Right now using family plans (4 lines, shared 100gb data, some limited tethering (I don't recall full allocation), and unlimited text and talk). Bought prepaid service cards around this time last year from Target at 10% off plus 5% redcard discount. So $85.50/month for 4 lines. I'm guessing Target will run the deal again soon, in which case I will reload for a year. Not bad IMO, and like some people mentioned, I was able to get a few months of free service by using referral codes with their rewards program.

I'm really trying to understand this deal. Need phone for my kid (new line). I'd like him on the most basic of basic plan (he can almost do with nothing because he only uses wifi). If I pay the $299 for the phone, what requirements am I under? I see TotalWireless's most basic plan is $23/mo. Am I looking at 23*12? Or is there any way around that?

WM's not giving me any of the T&C as I check out with the phone. (Haven't clicked buy yet.)

Thanks for this information! I was planning on activating this iphone 12 with my cheap Ebay BYOP SIM which I already own (was going to use it with my current iphone). So if I understand you correctly, Do use the SIM that comes with the Total Wireless iphone 12 mini and activate that SIM with a Tracfone plan such as Tracfone's one year plan ($100). I assume there is no way to use my new Ebay BYOP 1 year plan with the SIM that comes with this Total Wireless iphone 12?

Those are for unlocked phones, not locked ones. If you activate that BYOP sim (using another phone) then activate this one - keeping current number - plan/number will move to new iphone but you will still need to add new yr of service to qualify for unlock. That's the way it's worked in the past.
With sale of Tracfone companies to Verizon almost final it's impossible to know how all this will affect current customers.
