To be fair. There are some very bad reviews on Costco. The are currently 273 reviews (as of this posting) of the drive on the Costco website with 206 of them 5 star ratings and 18 one star ratings. A few of the negative reviews are just stupid as the reviewer(s) admit they didn't read the instructions, didn't understand what they're buying, etc. There are some reviews that comment about slow drives. On the plus side these portable Seagate 2.5 inch HDD drives can be shucked unlike the WD portable 2.5 inch HDD drives that have the USB port embedded into the drive hardware.

Costco reviews:
5★stars - 206
4★stars - 35
3★stars - 88
2★stars - 66
1★stars - 18

One should have a backup to their backup if they plan on using a portable/external USB drive like these as their single backup medium.

This is a very slow drive that it's best for backup only. The read/write rate is around 50mb/s. The WD one from Bestbuy is a little faster at 55-60mb/s. The full-size 3.5" ones usually get to be around 110mb/s. For gaming (consoles), you would want an SSD.

Is this available in stores too, or online only?
Apparently they can deliver it to me via Instacart in 2 hours, so Im thinking yes?
Yes this 5TB drive is typically available in the local Costco warehouse's.

Edit to add: A pic of the sales placard from a Costco in AZ about a week ago.

These Seagate 5TB One Touch drives are definitely, SMR.

Write speed: ~20 Mb/s

The CMR version available earlier this year had write speed of ~60-100 Mb/s.

Are the CMR versions still available anywhere?

LOL! You don't own one do you? Smilie
I get about 110-120 mb/s on them, same as the WD portables. You are using a usb 3.0 port, right? Smilie If you are using usb 2.0 port you would get a lot less. Pretty much all SMR drives in the portable 5 TB form are the same. If I got 20 Mb/s on any of my 5 TB WD or Seagate portables I would have returned it as defective.

I have CMR 3.5 inch WD 8TB REDS in my NAS. These 5 TB portables are useful for filling it up, and put in closet, to transfer files you need onto PC SSD, or on microSD card to put in phone/tablet for watching media on the go.

If one was going by only the price per TB value then a 4TB @ $65 would be a better value @ $16.25 per TB compared to the Costco sale on Seagate 5TB @ $18 per TB. (this assumes my math is correct)

Of course one may also want to factor in other issues like; warranty, Costco return policy, WD drive being "refurbed", eBay seller if WD drive isn't being sold by WD, any "bundled" extras that come with the drive(s).

Write speed of 20 Mb/s? Either bad drive, or make sure to use USB 3.0, or there is some other hardware issue.

On several PC's, using USB 3.0, the Seagate One Touch 5TB is showing approx (from Crystal DiskMark 1GB test): https://i.imgur.com/0lGhDUA.jpg

Read: 124.24 MB/s
Write 57.96 MB/s

For comparisons sake a 5TB Seagate Backup Plus Hub (3.5 inch) desktop external HDD purchased years ago from Costco gets; Read 130 - Write 76.6. A several year old 2.5 inch WD Blue HDD gets; Read 97.58 - Write 69.71 in an external USB 3.0 Ineteck enclosure. An older 1TB Seagate Backup Plus USB 3.0 drive gets; Read: 89.13 - Write 90.44. So, the read values from this 5TB Seagate One Touch are good, it's the write speed that is less than stellar when compared to other drives on my PC's. Likely due to this drive being SMR. That WD Blue drive was marginally better in the write department but worse in the read department than this Seagate drive. Go figure.

Seems the general consensus seems to be many if most of the larger 2.5 inch HDD external drives are SMR these days.

Some general comments about this drive:

Crystal DiskInfo results of the 5TB Seagate One Touch: https://i.imgur.com/7MYj85s.jpg

The 5TB Seagate One Touch comes out of the box formatted for exFAT. The drive out of the box has two partitions on it. a 200MB EFI(FAT32) partition and the main exFAT partition with a total capacity of 4657.3GB. The product insert / user manual does state: "Mac: For Time Machine, the hard drive must be formatted for HFS+ for Mac." Something to be aware of if you are a Mac Time Machine user.

This drive was purchased from a local Costco warehouse for $89.99 + local state sales tax.

Would this work to store videos? Or do I need an SSD
SSD works better if you would want to edit video's stored in a drive else just to store video/data this hard drive will do the job.
