Worked well this summer when we had fires. Have not had to change the charcoal filter yet but I've had to clean the small filter on front they just wash have Vacuum the front of the charcoal filter that make a little bit dusty
- No prefilter (so expect to change the filters more often)
- No sensor to control fan speed.
- No scheduling/night mode/etc.
- CADR of around 100 for a DIY box fan Vs. 300-400 here.
- Lower noise.
- You cannot build what you're talking about for $50 anyway.
You're addressing an argument nobody made. I did say that DIY box fans are NOISY and you cannot schedule it to turn off like you can these (e.g. at night).
Said the person repeating a marketing claim about a filter's "life." A washable pre-filter is free bonus filtration that costs nothing and is capturing particulate that would otherwise wind up in the HEPA filter fabric. Why would "marketing" be working hard to make sure I give them less money by using a washable filter in front of a HEPA filter?
Also, the furnace filters aren't bigger. These devices have filter material on four sides, rather than one side like a DIY box fan. There's more filter surface area here.
Nope. Fan type, fin design, and motor play a major role in determining noise (particularly at lower speeds).
If you don't know what you're talking about then maybe you shouldn't be giving out bad advice?

Filters are supposed to last a year and cost about $40 to replace?
