I know everyone hates on the Fire HD tablets, but for $20, these are a no-brainer for simple use. They're not for gaming or multitasking at all, but for watching a movie or using Alexa or controlling lights/etc they're perfectly serviceable.

There's a SD slot but if you wanted the 32GB instead of 16GB, it's $27.

Quad-Core: 1.3 GHz, with 1.5 GB of RAM (same as the 8th gen)

edit: use XDA Fire Toolbox to remove ads to speed it up

I'm not saying you should buy this at all (unless you need something to teach you to slow down and be more Zen) but old tablets make great clocks. There are a bunch of "big clock" apps that will keep the tablet awake as long as it's plugged in. I always set the screen to the lowest brightness setting that permits the numbers to be viewed, otherwise the LCD light makes it too hard (for me) to sleep.

If you yourself can't use this then think about an elderly relative who's eyes ain't so great anymore.

Sorry about the low quality of the pic, which shows either the 7th or 8th gen 8" Amazon tablet.
And for those unaware, getting Play Store onto these is very easy. Lots of simple YouTube step by step guides!
Can be used for a trade in and get $20 gift card and up to 20% off a new tablet.

Can one watch home videos off of a card? Or DVD rips?
Yes. Lol I use my 2011 touchpad and a bunch of old fire tablets for long car rides with the kids. Download a bunch of movies off YouTube and load up VLC.

haha, I hear ya -- I feel the same way. my solution was to buy a whole bunch of magnetic cables packed with 3 different tips, usb-c, micro usb, & lightning. this way, all my devices are a quick snap away. they're super cheap (like $3 each or something) and work better than normal calles that I'm sure will eventually break.

I have too many devices that will never have usb-c: 3d glasses (8x!), cheap led lights, headphones, tablets, etc.
same here, I bought 72 micro usb magnet adapters for all my tablets (used for my 10xtrivia events :-) )

How does it work as a cheap alternatives to an Echo Show?

I guess its audio part is definitely worse than a real Echo Show, but how about the rest?

They're good enough to play youtube videos. Only concern that I have is the battery. I've had some ZTE Trek 2 tablets that has been used for some time and I ended up replacing the batteries for about $16 each. if the battery of these 4 year old tablets start dying out, then you will have to spend at least $10 for a new battery.
I have two of the ZTE Trek 2 tablets for office and home and they must be at least 5 years old and running fine. Paid maybe $60. each and what a tablet! Never a glitch and Att compatible.

I traded in my kids 4 fire tablets (had these models) for the I think 2020- usb-C models 2 years ago. With trade in the cost to upgrade was something like $30 so I jumped on it.

These were just crummy all around. Buggy, slow, charging port was constantly an issue vs the new usb-c. I was always fixing these for my kids.

I don't recommend these in 2022… I'd wait for a deal on a newer kindle if you want a good tablet experience.

These might actually make sense for passive or light use, as some indicated above, e.g. clock, photo viewer, YouTube, streaming, video chats, PDFs, basic games, etc. Not every device has to be latest and greatest. That said, I just got the latest Fire HD 10 tablet, using the $15 Chase Rewards promo to bring it down to $60.

Thing is I'm having a hard time finding a decent case that positions the left-side front camera on top when stood up in horizontal mode, for video chats. It almost seems like this is not possible. Does anyone know of a good one that does this, of a traditional book jacket design?

Have a Kindle Fire HD 8 Gen 6, which is one gen older than this deal. I definitely noticed it was getting slower and more sluggish. I was able to breathe some new life into it this morning using the XDA Fire Toolbox to remove lockscreen adds and unused stock Amazon apps, so thank you for that information.

If I didn't have a tablet I'd definitely pick up one of these.

This makes a nice Remote control for Yamaha receivers with the AV Controller App.

My favorite is case for these is actually with 3D Printers. If you sideload Google play you can have Printoid (App for all of your Octoprint servers) up on this to control each of them, or watch through webcams.

I haven't found it so easy. The steps are very complicated.

Does anyone know how to get it to work for the Yahoo Sports app?

Here's the video step by step.
https://youtu.be/5YejBlzFytE

They also offer a link in the description to written if video isn't your thing.

(if you don't want to click the link here just search "Amazon fire tablet play store install" and it should be first video suggestion to come up from Android police)

That's as far as I can take you without doing it myself 🤷 ♂️ I've done it multiple times with zero issues. I've had mine for several years now, my grandmother (RIP) used hers for a few years. No problems.

I just traded one of these in to Amazon for $25. It was so slow to switch apps and general navigation that I found it to be unusable, even after a factory reset.
