One thing I'd like to mention.. and yes I know this is NOT the intended use for the hard drive but .. I had a seagate surveillance hard drive that worked well for my Direct TV unit as an external hard drive to store TV shows on .. came to my senses, realized netflix/hulu costs MUCH less and gives just as much entertainment value (was paying directTV over $100 a month what was I thinking?!?) ...
So after asking wiser heads than mine on the internet plugged my surveillance drive into my desktop PC for storage - and years later it's still working great as a storage hard drive for my files.
Of course if you get say a Western Digital black hard drive at 7200 rpm you'll get faster performance and a longer warranty (but at a greater price)... but just putting it out there, if someone's thinking of using this for storage on a desktop PC instead it just might work
