Good phone. Being in bed with AT&T? Not so good

WARNING PSA

Having gone through a literal 6 hour ordeal in my local Walmart store...these are not always shipped properly activated when purchased online. My first order went absolutely fine, but the second turned into a nightmare (AT&T suspended the line after a day, citing a point-of-purchase error). The local store should be able to fix it, however it's not a guarantee (in my case they returned the phone but couldn't resell it to me because their POS wouldn't scan it - wound up having to sell me a new phone from in-store). And because the e-receipt given to you by Walmart doesn't include the IMEI/SN of the phone you won't be able to get it fixed by AT&T.

Nope, the ATT unlock portal with deny without service months being met.
Do these come with an active SIM locked like the ST ones? In the past when the iPhone XS Max deal came in with contract, unlocking wasn't difficult. The recent T-Mobile deal, I was able to put a inactive SIM and get it unlocked. If its fully paid, I don't see why the iPhone cannot be unlocked.

How???
Inser the inactive SIM and turn on the phone. Once turned ON, check if the phone is now SIM locked to AT&T and send a request to AT&T https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ as a non-AT&T customer and they should unlock. I got it done recently twice by AT&T

I believe every word you said, but this still sounds too good to be true. So if I buy a SE from an ATT store, port in my current number, and then port out to a non ATT network after one month pre-paid service. I can then get my SE unlocked (total cost $99+$50+$15+taxes = $180)? The terms specifically say 6 months pre paid service is required.

If you use an active AT&T sim, what you said will become true. You need to use an inactive SIM. I have these sims for such purposes from AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. AT&T has been the smoothest to unlock though

So it has to be an inactive AT&T sim? Or cannot be any? I have some old Tmo prepaid sims I never activated. Would they work or do I have to dig up the old att sim from when my wife had a 6s on a postpaid Att plan? Not sure I still have it. I think I also might have a never activated att prepaid sim that came with a $200 iPhone 6 from many years ago. Back then I was able to use the phone on cricket and att unlocked it via their portal right away as well. Would that sim work? Looking to get a newer phone to replace my in-laws 6 so they can switch to visible so this seems like a good deal for that purpose.

Managed to snag one at a Walmart not too far away.

Anyone have confirmation if this will work with Cricket?
And I can confirm that this phone works with Cricket straight out of the box!

I didn't activate using the AT&T SIM card that came with the phone. Just popped in my Cricket SIM and it activated in a minute or so. Call, text, data - all worked without any issue.

If the phone is on flex policy, the first carrier wins and you need to reach out to T-Force on Twitter to unlock it.

Yes. You can totally use it as WiFi only device.

If I port my number out to Redpocket after 1 month AT&T prepaid service, the AT&T SIM came with the phone will become inactive, am I understanding correctly? Thanks for the good tips.

This was entirely pre-paid AT&T. I had 2 pre-existing lines and bought these phones as replacements for those lines.

The first was scanned and shipped properly from Walmart.com. Popped my existing SIM into the new phone and everything works just fine.

The second was NOT scanned properly but shipped to me regardless. When I put my other existing SIM into this phone it did activate according to Apple's server and I had service. After 24 hours I could no longer make/receive calls and had no data connectivity.

AT&T explained that because the retailer did not scan the phone properly they suspended the line/SIM that was last inserted in the phone (my best guess is their system attempting to recognize a stolen phone). They offered no other contingency than taking the phone back to Walmart to have their wireless department "rescan" the phone so it could be properly activated and to have my service reactivated.

Ultimately my Walmart store couldn't perform this voodoo magic, so they wound up returning the phone I bought online and sold me a new phone that was in stock at the store. I still had to call AT&T and have them re-activate the line after I gave them the IMEI of the new phone, now everything is working.

Simply not worth the headache, you're better off going to the AT&T store if you want this exact phone/carrier. And for what it's worth I did actually go back to my local Walmart today to see if they'd do a price adjustment (since I went through this calamity 2 days ago). Wouldn't budge.
Thanks for the clarification. That does suck indeed. They canceled every order I had so I'm not able to get one any way.

You don't have to be in ATT network to unlock. you can use ATT MVNO on this phone and get it unlocked after 6 month.
So we can find the cheapest monthly MVNO plan? I Assume this is around $25.

It does sound way too good to be true. The early unlocking of prepaid phones via the ATT portal ended around 2018 / 2019 in my and my friends' experience. The last phones I unlocked were S9's and iPhone 6s in 2018, nothing since.

Everything I've read online on reddit and other places indicate this is no longer doable. My friends have tried with Cricket phones and other ATT prepaid phones since then and have been unsuccessful every time.

I'm skeptical that this is still being done.
