Lowest price ever according to CCC, and many seem to recommend this "starter" set for beginners. I'll give Dungeons & Dragons a try! Over 15,000 ratings, 4.7 on Amazon.

If you use CCC, it looks like this has been under $10 only a handful of times since 2014, and $8.10 was a previously low for a very short duration. If you're on the fence, this seems like a pretty "slick" deal.

I've been playing D&D in all it's forms sicne 1976...AD&D and 3.5 versions are both my favorites. But like jlatimer11 said, DMs make all the difference. Story telling is an art, to be a good DM, you have to be able to tell a story. Granted, dungeon crawl hack & slash games can be pretty damn fun too.

If anyone is in the Royal Oak Michigan area, I'm always looking for a group to game with.

Cheers.
This is a great deal and a fun introduction to D&D. Highly recommend you pick up one for yourself. I always pick up several for toy drives.

I've played a lot of DnD adventure system games and others in the genre, but never DnD proper. Might grab this just incase inspiration strikes.
For me the combat part of D&D can be painfully slow-- relative to a video game with the same rules. A lot of waiting for people to decide what they want to do, and roll their dice, and update the stats, etc.

But the role-playing aspect (when done well) is some of the most fun I've ever had.

Note this is sort of a tutorial game rather than all the rules. Still good to get your feet wet.

Tempted to buy another just to complete the dice set from the one I already have, but not sure where those dice wound up. Really a bummer they didn't include an 11-piece dice set like they did in the later Essentials Kit.

Is this a simplified version of the 4E or 5E rules?

5E rules. It doesn't include rules for character creation (the Essential Set does include those), but you can get those for free from https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/...basicrules.

Bought when this deal was live - wanted to update.

I have NEVER played D&D, but have always been interested. My brothers and friends all live in separate spaces and thought we'd give it a shot (using Beyond for character sheets/rolls and roll20 for the game itself - we don't like the rolling on roll20 and think its better to just switch tabs between our Beyond character sheets for rolls, or just using dice).

Gotta say - as someone who has NEVER played before (some of the people in our party have played, but are by no means experts), we had a TON of fun and are hoping to continue our adventure (we didn't even finish Ch. 1 - came close, but not quite, after about 6 hours of playing).

This does an excellent job of getting you started (especially in conjunction with Beyond and roll20 for our virtual game) - there are some idiosyncracies and questions we still had - but in general it did a great job of getting us into the game and having some fun.
