Finicky routers and "used" go together like criminals and jail. There is a place for these and it's not in your home. Refurbished at least you have a chance like they went through rehab and maybe straight now but more than likely will result back to their old ways. Who ever thumbs down this comment must have bought one ๐
I bought one off Craigslist last year for 30. Loaded dd-wrt on if. Does alright but OpenVPN perf seems limited to 50 megabits or so. And one of the non removable antennas is lose and likes to fall over.

Yep. Netgear is sketchy to begin with. No customer support after 90 days unless you pay for it so essentially a 90 day warranty on their new products. Forget about any help from them with this. I guess this is amazon so when you realize it sucks you can be the nth person to return the bunk router. Also, how do people not understand your post. Netgear sucks. Used netgear really sucks. If you feel lucky play the lotto and use the winnings to buy a non trash router.

I got this and it keeps saying no ethernet cable connected. I have never had this problem with any of my routers before. The damn cable is connected . I resetted like 19 times and switching to new cables and it still doesn't work.

I was about to buy one of these to test but this is the r6700ax and it's BCM. I don't think there is support from tomato or dd-wrt on this model. I'd love it if I'm wrong, but I believe you are thinking of r6700v3. Right?

Depending on your internet speeds, you're probably better off using WireGuard on your router. Better yet, get a RPi4, install WireGuard using PiVPN and you can get nearly 800-900 Mbps if you have gigabit internet. OpenVPN requires a beefy processor that can handle AES crypto. Most consumer routers will be too underpowered to handle OpenVPN.

I've bought several refurbished routers and all have been good. My mom is still using one of them it's been going for a very long time.

Agreed. WIREGUARD is the new VPN standard. Upgrade and you will not regret it.
