Can't really describe it. I owned a bunch of premium laptops and nothing really compares to the Thinkpad.
I currently own an Alienware x15 r1 but I owned other generation Alienwares too, Razer blades, Lenovo legions, asuses, you name it.
I always return to the Thinkpad. There's something about the balance that they nail perfectly.
If the laptop is just sitting on the desk, almost every other laptop is better but if you hold it on your lap on a couch or on the bed, Thinkpad has everyone beat.
performance on the Thinkpad is worse than the competition at this price but that's not what they're aiming for
Says ships in +4 months
Looks like a nice machine but a bit too rich for my blood. :/

please please please if you are planning on using it without a charger, don't get this laptop. The battery time is terrible and it will drain your battery within 2 hours of normal use. It does charge super quick but the charger is heavy and the fan is going loud. If you plan on using it as a desktop then just buy a desktop!!!!! you've been warned. I am returning mine soon.
Bought this machine and nearly exact same specs (I got single channel 32gb because I plan on buying another stick). Great build quality, but I have had issues. I had to wait months to receive it, lenovo support is useless when it comes to orders, and it has given me problems with occasional crashes and graphical issues that requires hard boots. These are more problems than I expect from a new laptop, and I already sent it in for repairs lol. I recommend you for the next few batches for Lenovo to work out the quirks.
On paper it's perfect, i7 and a 3070 packed into this relatively light laptop which is perfect since I carry it around for college. Thermals are subpar though. I recommend the 3070 as the 3080(not sure if the P1 has that option or if it's just the X1 Extreme) because it actually performs only marginally better due to thermal throttling. If size and weight isnt an issue, I hear the T15g gen 2 is a better alternative since it has better thermals while having similar options to the P1G4, and it does support more ram (128 vs 64).
I do wish there was a more alternatives to this model, but there isn't many laptops you can get with these specs in a decent sized chassis. Plus 16:10 was a big yes for me.
Comparing the two and based on some comparison videos I saw, I think the latest m1 MacBooks are actually a better option. I only recommend going this route if your need the dgpu in a laptop form factor or if you need the windows support. I was primarily interested in this laptop because Im going into engineering and needed the dedicated graphics and windows support for running CAD software among other things

How's the battery? Also, can it be charged with a 100W type C adapter? I'm looking for alternatives from my G7 7590. I got a G7 7590 for undergrad but it honest to god gets 3 hours of battery before it dies so now I'm looking for another laptop for grad school that hopefully lasts longer
Sure, but the X1 Extreme Gen 4 and P1 Gen 4 are cross shopped since they're nearly identical, and the 3060 is one of the main configs for the X1 version.
Can you point us to some of those bad thermal reviews? I checked couples including Mathew Moniz, Notebook check and the thermal performance has improved lot over last generation and uses a vapour chamber cooling.
Another thing, what did you mean by "wait until the second generation"... because this is already a 4th gen product.
Please go to thinkpad reddit, check out Loki's internal testing.
Yes it is an improvement because gen 1-3 of the X1/P1 was a throttle king the 8750h -> 10750h all couldn't push above 35 wattage if you taxed the GPU, ran hot as a heater.
This is literally the only Thinkpad that has quality control issues too, with a weak bottom panel.
The new-gen is a bit better but there are vastly better alternatives because for 2000$ buying a laptop that can't even take advantage of its Intel CPU is a joke.
Repasting doesn't work with this laptop either, nothing can cool this CPU and not throttle it as its a design flaw that will probably be fixed with a beefer cooling system, or just steal the legion 7's vapor chamber and call it a day.
Mind you I also use this laptop for work and I literally was pissed it basically ran like a toaster doing blender LOL. I love lenovo and thinkpads also and even as a shill this laptop is nothing but a poor performer.
The legion 7 with the 3070. If you prefer Lenovo and the 16:10 screen.
The legion 7 has a better screen (165hz 500 nits) compared to this 60hz 400 nits
Better Thermals - Vapor Chamber isn't weak sauce and can cool it
Better Build Quality - Thinkpads of old or even the T or X1 Gen 9 have better build quality but the Legion 7 is better build quality then this X1/P1 laptop due to the creaking noise, the weaker hinge compared to last gen X1E3 / P1 G3
Legion 7 is full alu/ metal chassis in the lines of a Macbook / Razer Blade / Zbook / Thinkbook laptop
Key travel on this gen 4 has been reduced compared to last gen and keys on the keyboard are more shallow.
Battery life is meh both are bad compared to something like the Macbook, the ryzen version of the L7 will do better too.
Your GPU will be full wattage compared to let like a max q on the Thinkpad while it will be properly cooled as well.
Pricing - Legion 7 is mostly had cheaper then the Thinkpad. If you want Thinkpad go for the T15G 2, P17 G2, P15 G2.
They all have good cooling and old-school ThinkPad builds and not a weak sauce keyboard.

As a ThinkPad lover, whose been looking for a Workstation to go along with my Legion, I can't stop recommending the P15 G2/ T15G2.
If it ever gets posted on Slickdeals, its basically a Legion 5 Pro cooling system + Thinkpad Build Quality while being durable and powerful.
Having your machine run well, work well, not breaking, and not having quality control issues is a joy to have.
The Thinkpad P1 / X1E4 is the first Thinkpad in a while, where people complain about terrible the product is.
Many Reddit posts, laptop discords, Thinkpad forums have nothing but complaints of it. Even Lenovo.com is preventing negative reviews for this laptop.
It shows this is NOT the way Thinkpad should be. Thinkpad should be a work machine that is no compromise. This one isn't it.
If you want true performance by Lenovo, get a legion laptop
If you want a real Thinkpad get a Thinkpad P15 G2, P17 G2
If you want a light Thinkpad + a workhorse at home.
Get a Thinkpad X13 Gen 2 (853$ here in SD) (Search for it) + a Legion 5/5pro (1100 -> 1400$) depending on GPU
Both of them combined is around the price or a few hundred more then this flawed defective laptop.
As someone that has owned a Thinkpad X1 Extreme gen 2 and a P1 gen 3 and a P15, I'd 1000% go for the p1/x1 over the p15, they're waaaay more enjoyable to use.
You can really feel the ThinkPads stutter under full load, there's none of that on other laptops that prioritize performance.
Since you're not getting groundbreaking performance out of either of these laptops might as well choose the one that's most comfortable to use.
Currently using a P1 Gen 3, i7 pro Quattro, 4K touch screen, can't last for a 2hr zoom meeting even after turning on battery saver power settings and lowering screen brightness. It requires a big battery brick and cannot charge up fast enough through USB C. I also have a legion 5 pro amd 3070 2k screen which seems snappier and faster. I am also coming from a X1 gen 2 yoga, which has performed really well though not as powerful, with touch screen and stylus and can run for hours on battery.
My P1 throttles, is loud when fans are on, and sometimes has random output issues with multiple screens connected (3 extra) even though the Quattro should be more than enough processing power to handle them. I think they hit their limit with cooling the power hungry and hot processors and deducted graphics and traded thinness for usability.

The performance difference is pretty big though.
The P Series + T15g can output way more wattage and performance compared to the crippled X1 E4 / P1G4
Those Thinkpads don't stutter under full load, they are great machines that can withstand the end of time.
Unlike this X1 / P1 Line which is made to cater to Macbook Pro (intel fans) that want a Windows alternative instead of the XPS 15.
Throttling heater with poor build quality I mean the keyboard is much closer to an ideapad then a normal Thinkpad T series.
Also the idle temps for those Thinkpads are normal like 35C and not 60C.
The display quality, yes the 16:10 aspect ratio is better but the color gamut and brightness of the 4K model are weaker than the other Thinkpad Workstations as well.
The legion 7 is basically what this laptop should have been.
Amazing performance, 165hz screen, 140 wattages 3070 compared to this 80-95 wattage or less 3070, oh it's cheaper too.

Just get a Legion 7 or 7i,
Its basically what this machine should have been
- 165hz 500 nits 16:10 display
- Full Alu/metal build like MBP, zbook, razerblade
- Vapor chamber that can cool the CPU/GPU
- Way better Performance
You just lose the Thinkpad design, the nipple point, and ???
Because build quality of this guy isn't comparable to real Thinkpads.
The gen 1- gen 3 had throttling issues, but at least the keyboard, screen. build quality were flag ship ready and not meme like this gen.
I mean the Thinkbook 16P is basically what this laptop also could have been, its just missing the Thinkpad keyboard.
This is not worth 1900$ unless you for some reason want a portable heater that outputs less performance than a 900$ laptop.
What are the benefits of this over an hp omen or razer blade?
For me, I will always get a thinkpad. Nothing beats that red mouse and scroll button at your thumb. Perfect mouse and scrolling action from the home row position.
For me, I will always get a thinkpad. Nothing beats that red mouse and scroll button at your thumb. Perfect mouse and scrolling action from the home row position.
Yes Thinkpads are king but this Thinkpad does not have the same keyboard as the older Thinkpads.
- 1.5mm travel compared to 1.7
- Keys are more shallower
The Razer and the Omen beats this Thinkpad in:
- Performance
- Build Quality
- Screen Quality
- Battery
- Cooling / Thermals
- The Razer Blade Advanced Models have a better Vapor Chamber as well
I seriously don't see this a deal and this is a poor device for anyone looking into Thinkpads, its like buying an Intel Mac.

Only the T1200 and A2000 go without the vapor chamber.

Even Moniz video shows the damn CPU is thermal throttling like crazy. The vapor chamber can't cool the I7 11800h much rather the i9.
