I have 1st Gen Essential and this Smartclock 2nd Gen (apparently, different family/lineup), got them both when they were on sale in-store. I prefer the 1st Gen Essential because:
* Built-in Light
* Built-in USB port
* Better speaker volume control (1st Gen smoothly goes louder/quieter, 2nd gen jumps really loud)
* Smaller footprint
The 2nd Gen plus point is it has better screen (can display photos, clock faces). This is pretty cool if you like pretty photos, so if this your deciding factor, then go for 2nd Gen.
I haven't explored whether both gens can have/save "local alarms" but for my use case, my alarms are internet-dependent. Which means without internet, it goes down too! I am not bothered by it, but if you are, then it might be a deal breaker.
Major plus factor for me is the fact that I use this as a "Family Bell". Another use case is, it also works as broadcast system i.e. "I am almost home, open the door as I have lots of groceries". Since I have all rooms covered, no matter where my kids are, they can hear me.
I am not sure if you can use it like a two-way intercom, but I don't have the Mics turned on these, I have the physical mic button on off as I don't really like these devices always hearing our conversation.
I have 11 of these, 1 in each room, living room, media room, kitchen, garage, play room, fun room, master bedroom, bath 1, bath 2, bath 3, bath 4. scattered across all 2 floors with one Wireless Access Point and they have all been solid (no disconnect). They all reside in my IoT VLAN among other smart bulbs (>10), smart outlets (>10), streaming players, and a few IoT devices (>10).
At this price, I think this is pretty solid with a free smart bulb.
