3rd gen (2016) significantly improved color accuracy, especially for blues and greens.
4th gen improves on color saturation although some people prefer the colors from 3rd gen. Biggest change with 4th gen is the option to connect and control via Bluetooth without requiring a hub.

Yes, but you need a zigbee hub/USB controller if you don't already have one. Something like CC2652R(B), there's a bunch of options there. Or a ConBee II.
