Toyota Highlander vs Explorer

352 26 January 4, 2022 at 05:35 PM
Looking for anybody that owns maybe a 2021 or so highlander hybrid. I'm stuck between that and a 2021 Ford Explorer. I can't even drive the Toyota because there is no inventory, but I have a local dealer who is able to pre order one for me tomorrow…. I've driven the Explorer…. But if anybody has the highlander would love to hear your thoughts…. Especially the hybrid edition and 3rd row legroom and trunk space. Seems the Explorer might have more…

Of the 2, I would say get a BMW X5. You could rescue a lot of plasma tvs in it if that opportunity presented itself.

could always look around and see if you can find a used 2020 highlander to test drive. year to year differences aren't always big for toyota, i want to say toyota does the big refresh every 3 years? it might be 2 though i forget. but if you look at the powertrain the 2020 and 2021 i believe they are the same.

i'd take a toyota over a ford. i'd pick a honda over a toyota since i don't like the toyota dealer by me and i've been happy with my last 2 hondas (camry -> civic -> insight)

Real answer on the third post? Oof fine.

Highlander Hybrid based on resale value, perceived reliability and excellent fuel economy.

OP didn't specify whether they needed AWD. I would still go with Highlander Hybrid with the e-AWD, should be good enough for most people who stick to the tarmac.

any car is going to stick to the tarmac, they don't have nearly enough lift.

and i'm not talking about this kind of lift. (in case the image doesn;t show up https://static.designboom.com/wp-...letter.jpg )

Thank you all for the post… so personally I have had M3's in the past, and I ended up with an explorer when the kids got old enough to mess up the car… I would have gone the X5 path, but the wife never did like my BMW's. So we went the Toyota route, but I've come to learn it's a "take what you can get" market at the moment. She wanted a particular color outside and graphite interior but I've searched from California to Georgia and all in between and above and below and apparently the combination is all pre sold. I've even offered a dealer an additional $1000 just to get the color she wanted and they laughed and said we can get close but doubt they can get the specifics. Also FWD vs AWD…. Another problem… the one we found with the external color is FWD, and black leather (moon dust for the external). I've found this peanut butter color interior and Birch which is almost white… but she didn't like either… and not sure if any of you have the problem with blue jeans bleeding into the seats, but we have this issue big time with all of our cars… even my BMW had this issue and I had to get the seats dyed again because I couldn't get the stupid blue Jean dye out. And these are not cheap jeans, just apparently everybody makes cheap dye or something now. So anyway if it comes in and we are lucky it will be moon dust FWD with black leather. Couldn't find the graphite that wasn't already sold anywhere…. :-(

But we did drive a highlander… and yes the back third row is a joke… they claim 3 people can sit there… maybe if I pick up some leprechauns or something like that… but normal human older kids or adults? No way… Explorer wins hands down for amount of room…. Just I agree with resell value…. But it's still a good driving car…
